Be-Bop And More

380 songs from many eras, including a dozen or so Be-Bop tunes by Dexter Gordon or Fats Navarro from the late 1940's The tunes themselves can all be found on either the DEXTER DIGS IN - THE YOUNG DEXTER GORDON CD or the Fats Navarro GOIN' TO MINTON'S CD. The tunes aren't all that fast but have that Be-Bop flavor.

Tadd Dameron's The Tadd Walk also qualifies as Be-Bop and there are others by Tadd as well, Good Bait, Lady Bird, The Casbah.

Also there is a career spanning assortment of almost 30 Gerry Mulligan tunes.

There are over 20 original Jazz tunes recorded by Blue Note Records during the 1950's and 60's including the full version of Dat Dere from THE BIG BEAT - Blakey.

Thorough, Systematic and Excellent (the review includes my rant about poor quality education)

I have been teaching geometry for over thirty years. I've used this book or an earlier incarnation of it for most of that time. Although the book has it's weaknesses, it is overall thorough and systematic. Negative reviews of this textbook are based primarily on a comparison of this book to watered-down texts now more popular with schools. I also tutor and one of my students explained to me that his school uses a different text, because that text concentrates on material covered on the SAT. I've had students who transfered to another school come back and tell me I made geometry unnecessarily complicated. His new school had an easier text. As another reviewer noted, the textbook committees of many schools are primarily concerned with protecting the reputation of the school by passing students and NOT with the education of the student. They perpetuate mediocrity. Better schools in my area use this textbook, but most often it's only used for "honors" classes.

This is a difficult text, not because it's a bad book, but because it presents a high quality, proof-based exposure to geometry. For years I've been hearing fellow educators tout how courses expose students to higher order thinking. The fact is, education in the United States, especially math education, does not expose students to higher order thinking, but substitutes mechanical processes for true understanding, and politically correct processes like projects and group work for rigor. Schools now use group tests and quizzes so students have a better chance of passing, not a better chance of learning. This begins back at the lowest levels of math education. Geometry is usually the first course of any sort where the student truly has to think. In algebra (not the way it should be taught, but the way it is taught), students memorize mechanical processes without understanding why the process works. If they remember the steps required for a particular type of problem, and get their arithmetic right, they get a correct answer. When a student creates a two-column proof in geometry, reasoning from limited information to a final conclusion, no teacher or text can teach a student to always get a right answer. Getting a right answer involves actual thought and may take time and repeated analysis.

Geometry is a language intensive branch of mathematics. If students don't acquire the vocabulary of the study (definitions, postulates and theorems), they can't "think" about the problem. It's like trying to lear a foreign language without learning vocabulary. This book does a very good job of laying out this "vocabulary", with a few exceptions.

The authors of the book have made the book weaker gradually over the last twenty years. I believe they have done so in an attempt to make the course easier. Unfortunately, they've merely muddied the water. Incongruities and inaccuracies have crept in over the years, but the text still remains the best available.

I suspect the publishers will be dropping this textbook from it's catalog. It hasn't been updated since 1999, although this is unclear. When I last checked with the publisher, they had not made any plans to update it. It is actually beneficial if they don't update it, I suppose, since when they have in more recent years, the book has become of less quality.

Finally, if you have a child taking geometry with this book, count your blessings. Help your child to be successful by having them memorize the vocabulary, postulates and theorems as a first step to understanding. Additionally, encourage them not to give up and keep thinking.

I love this book

I have taught Honors and College Prep Geometry with this book (and its previous edition) for sixteen years.
This year I tried a different book with one of my classes. I am begging to go back to this book.
This book does not have all the 'bells and whistles' of new Geometry textbooks. It doesn't need them. My new textbook has powerpoint presentations, lesson planners, CD ROM testbanks, etc. Guess what? You can have them. They don't present lessons in any manner I would present them, and the test banks don't test the content of the chapter. In addition, I prefer to supplement lessons with my own real life examples and further explanations, not 'canned' material that is found in my current text and its technology.
A good teacher can take this book and raise the bar for academic excellence. No fluff, nothing watered down.
Newer is not better.
I know my students were given a mental workout-challenged themselves- and understood Geometry when I used this book. My classes will be going back to this book soon.
To the reviewers who say there aren't enough examples, that's the point! Geometry is about developing a skill. You can't build a skill if everything is given to you. Push yourself a little harder, don't be afraid to fail, and ask questions. That's how you learn.
The one con is that test questions are not available on a modern CD ROM, eliminating the need to cut and paste (and not giving the ability to change test versions with a click of a button).
Still, the test questions supplied are fantastic.

an extremely good teacher on supply chain management

The authors of the book are quite well-known as professors in Michigan Uni.It is one of the best book for a new-comer or student to supply chain field.It owns a lot of industrial insights as supporting cases and also, quite a few other useful data and tables.The theoretic structure of the book is quite fruitful and helpful, especially to whom wanna have a clear and complete picture of the supply chain management.It not only discuss the issues of logistics and supply chain management, but also, which I think is much more constructive, provide the reader a whole new view of the business operation and management.It raises the question how to run a successful and competitive firm and offers some useful ideas to help the reader to reach the conclusion by himself.It is quite a good book for students to use at class and read off class as well.Of course,managers who interested in supply chain and logistics should appreciate it very much!

Rip-off alert: Confusing, disorganized, and seemingly not proofread at all.

There are numerous typos throughout the text, and the website doesn't have errata posted. The cases and problem sets at the end of the book don't directly relate to any particular chapter. Furthermore, the questions in the cases require knowledge that the book doesn't even address. Also, the cases have numerous typos which make a sound analysis almost impossible. For instance, in Case 7 the reader is told to analyze the inventory at three distribution centers: Atlanta, GA; Mechanicsburg, PA; and Sparks, NV. The accompanying spreadsheet has data for Atlanta, Mechanicsburg, and New Brunswick?! The spreadsheet for Case 7 also has several columns of data which aren't labeled whatsoever. Even when the data have labels, they are so esoteric that they are only likely to confuse students who are trying to learn about logistics (e.g. Atl Std, Atl Calc SS, Atl Sigma C, Atl k, Atl Adj k, Atl Service, Atl Avg Service, Atl f(k) @ 95, Atl SS @ 95, Atl Avg @ 95, k). None of the labels listed here have any description or definition anywhere in the text or in the spreadsheet. Costing around $200, this text is one of the biggest rip-offs I have ever seen!

and this is one of the worst books I have ever read

PLEASE BE AWARE!! THIS BOOK IS A RIP OFF!!

I really just want people to know how poorly written and confusing this book is. I am an extremely avid reader, and this is one of the worst books I have ever read. For a book on the topic of Logistics, you would think efficient writing would be of their utmost concern.

Although I cannot say with 100% certainty, I would be shocked if the positive reviews weren't fake. There is no way anyone this this book is good, never mind great. Click on their names and their reviews appear suspicious.

Earning respect and achieving goals are made easier if you read Assertiveness

When I was younger, especially in my days as a high school student, I was one of those guys who made friends easily with both teachers and fellow students but had a hard time when it came to dating and achieving certain goals which required collaboration from others.

It wasn't that I was an "ugly duckling" - even though at times I thought I was - or a disagreeable fellow; I had a circle of friends from a cross-section of my high school's student body that included football players, choir singers, members of the drama club and - of course - some of my fellow journalism students. However, when I really wanted to start dating girls, I tended to "wimp out" and become the "invisible man" because I couldn't find a way to get women to notice me in a positive light.

Looking back on those days and even further on into my adulthood, I realize now that although shyness played a lot of havoc both in my personal and professional ambitions, my biggest problem was lack of assertiveness.

Now, as Judy Murphy points out in "Assertiveness: How to Stand Up For Yourself and Still Win the Respect of Others," assertiveness - which is not to be confused with "aggressiveness" - is one of the most important factors that determine whether we get a job we are seeking, plum assignments and promotions, or if we can attract a significant other and build a happy, healthy and stable relationship based on love and respect.

At the start of the book, Murphy explains the difference between being assertive and being aggressive, which is important to understand because some people, especially guys, tend to say to non-assertive peers "to be aggressive and go for what you want." I often heard this chestnut when I asked more successful guys how to get girls to like me or how to ask my student newspaper's editors for stories that I wanted to write.

However, as Murphy writes, aggressiveness "lacks respect. Aggressive people lack respect for others," while assertiveness is all about being firm in seeking your goals without being disrespectful or obnoxious.

In the book's six chapters - not including the author's introduction or her conclusion - Murphy discusses such key topics as to how non-assertive persons can train themselves to be more assertive by improving their body language and manner of speaking, how self-perception (especially negative self-perception) determines one's levels of assertiveness, how individuals can get further ahead in their careers by correcting bad habits - such as talking like a "wimp" or being the "unassuming type" in social functions - and gaining positive attention from supervisors and other "authority figures" at work.

Murphy even addresses the dynamics of romantic relationships - including marriages - which can be negatively affected by one's lack of assertiveness and self-respect. As the author points out, "If you want your relationships to be a haven, a safe respite from the storm, it is important to learn to assert yourself with the people you are close to."

"Assertiveness: How to Stand Up For Yourself and Still Win the Respect of Others" is written in a crisp and easy-to-follow style, and Murphy's authorial tone is informative and engaging, with no heavy-handed preaching or academically dryness that would turn off readers.

A Practical Guide to Assertiveness

We live in a society where people confuse assertiveness and aggressiveness when pursuing what we want in life. Judy Murphy's book, Assertiveness: How to Stand Up for Yourself and Still Win the Respect of Others, does much to clear up that misconception in a straightforward, concise manner.

Assertiveness is attaining a balance between considering your own wants, needs, and goals with the wants, needs, and goals of other people. Aggressive people act in self-serving ways that lack respect for others; passive people act in ways that show no respect for themselves. Using a list of principles called the Bill of Rights of Assertiveness, Ms. Murphy guides readers to understand how they think about themselves, how they communicate, and how others perceive them can impede acting assertively and getting the respect they deserve.

The book provides useful examples of passive, aggressive, and assertive behavior in a variety of settings, and then follows up with helpful exercises and suggestions for the reader to practice being assertive in those settings as well. Especially strong and true-to-life examples are given in the section on assertiveness in personal relationships, covering such topics as miscommunication between significant others and parent-child challenges. Another interesting section addresses how to raise assertive children, which is such an important issue given the widespread bullying problems in schools and neighborhoods.

The major concept of the entire book is that behaving with respect toward others and toward oneself will go a long way in assuring that one will be respected by others. Constructive assertiveness can also reduce stress, increase honest relationships with others, and benefit health. This book is a handy guide to improving one's life through being more assertive that will be read more than once by many of its readers.

Practical, Sensible, and Doable Advice

Good book on the topic of assertiveness. I've never heard any author talk about assertiveness quite like this one. She doesn't allow you to blame others for how people treat you. She realizes that people treat you in response to what you are doing, and in many cases, what you are not doing. She gives you valuable advice about what to do and how to behave.

Also there is a strong emphasis on developing your inner game. Inner game is key to asserting yourself effectively. How you feel inside drives how you act outside. There is useful advice for building "a strong foundation of self."
