Praise for "The Blond Knight of Germany"

This book is a well-written biography of Germany's greatest WWII ace, little known to the West, because he fought on the Eastern Front. Believe me, though, he is well-known in Germany, not only for his wartime exploits but for his experiences as a POW in Stalin's Soviet Russia lasting 10 1/2 long years after WWII was over and his role in the post-war Luftwaffe. In addition to biography, the book is a study of the consequences of coming under the jack boot of Soviet Communism, the Soviet prisoner experience, physically, mentally and spiritually along with methods and techniques for combatting and overcoming the brutal treatment by a Communist secret police regime. There are references to the US experience in Korea and Viet Nam that may be unknown to the younger reader needing to relearn the lessons of history so as not to repeat it in the present time.

Great book about the greatest fighter pilot of all time

Great book about the greatest fighter pilot of all time. (352 victories) Great details regarding becoming a fighter pilot during the early stages of the German invasion of Russia during WW2. Very honest. Early on Erich screwed up, was repromanded appropriately by his superiors, and he learned from his mistakes. Later on he was the teacher for the new German fighter pilots in his squadron, which Erich did his best to keep alive during a very dangerous time. Highly Recommended!

A GREAT read!

I love this book, it gives an awesome view of aerial combat from 'the other side',
and will ruin you when you watch old war movies, how these men fought in air
combat is nothing at all like what Hollywood made in the movies.
Erich also gave a somewhat heartbreaking story of his personal life while
in Russian prisons, and how the Hitler's staff (Goering mainly) was giving the wrong
information to Hitler. If Hitler had the correct info the war would have gone on longer
and there would have been more allied casualties.

Loved this book. It's hard to believe you can be dating a serial killer and have no idea, but it DOES happen. This was a hard book to find. But, like anything you have to wait for, it's worth it once you get it! It is gorgeous! From the moment I took it out of the box, I didn't move. I even took it to my best friends house the next day and shared it with her. I love photography and especially photos of my favorite celebrities. I highly recommend this book. It's also a good-looking book on your coffee table.

About the Author
Sharon Vaughn holds the H. E. Hartfelder/Southland Corporation Regents Chair in Human Development and is currently the Director of the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk at the University of Texas. She was the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Learning Disabilities and the Co-Editor of Learning Disabilities Research and Practice. She is the recipient of the CEC Research Award and the AERA Special Education SIG distinguished researcher award. She is the author of more than 200 articles and 10 books that address the reading outcomes of students with learning difficulties, learning disabilities and English language learners. She is currently the Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on several Institutes for Education Sciences, National Institute for Child Health and Human Development, and Office of Special Education Programs research grants investigating effective interventions for students with learning disabilities and behavior problems as well as students who are English language learners. Excellent "How To" for Optical Designers

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

I bought this book because as an electronics engineer I did not know enough about optical systems to be able to design one. Reading this book and downloading some freeware optical design software (and using the book to help understand the outputs) has solved that problem

One of the best technical books I own

Having studied the comments on four other books before holding my breath and purchasing "Optical System Design," I was still worried that it would turn out to be a physics-oriented treatment of the subject despite the comments.

I was happily surprised.

Not only is this book well- and often humorously-written (to me at least), it has memorable explanations which make applying the knowledge easier.

In particular, the excellent treatment throughout the book on the six major third-order aberrations' causes has helped me use my optical design tools more correctly. I do not guess about specific changes, I know what to expect when making a change in the design.

I have found over the years that purchasing two texts on a topic is a good strategy. One must be a "thick book," like "Optical System Design," and the other a "thin book" which serves as a map. I'm still looking for the "thin" compliment to OD, but its layout and index are good enough that I will probably not follow my normal pattern.

a bit disappointed

Based on other reviews, you expect a highly polished product - full of glossy enlightening diagrams and explanations. The book is OK and conveys many important notions of optics adequately, especially if you have some background knowledge. However, at times, it feels like a potpourri, too wide to be under control and lacking in rigor. The authors present a few formulas at times and assure us that they could write many more "if they wanted to". However, this book really feels like the work of practitioners - a bit thin on the theory side. Many figures have a printing quality too low to be readable (so much for the Nyquist criteria, which by no coincidence is presented quite poorly) and the chapter on diffractive optics is a didactic catastrophe. Just because a book has been around for a long time and is respected in the field doesn't mean that it can't be improved upon. Still, I find myself reading the book time and again. The book will complement nicely Born and Wolf, which lies at the other extreme.

Did. Not. Like. The. Book.

Well, I kept telling myself no about this one. But when it came up as free, I thought to myself, "why the heck not?"

Because I thought it sucked. That's why. Rylee was horrible, and Colton wasn't much better. Her first encounter with him was making out with some other woman. She then gets trapped in a room, and for very legit reasons, has a panic attack. Colton gets her out, and with a "f--- it" kisses her. She allows it. Even though she knows he was just with someone else. She seems to think all he was doing with the other woman was kissing, but it never comes out and says, so seriously, Rylee is sloppy seconds. She finally pushes him away. He proceeds to get into her life in ways that would have normal women running for a restraining order. I found none of that romantic, or sweet, or anything else. I found Colton's actions with the orphans sweet, but that was the only redeeming thing I found about him.

His dark past is hinted at throughout the book, but never explained. Then the book ends on the requisite cliff-hanger. I'm so over those. Since I didn't like the book, I went on to read reviews of books 2 and 3 to see what happens. And stuff is continued to be drug out over the next two books. Seriously? I really wish that kind of thing would just stop. So often stuff comes off as filler, and I just want the story. Since I know roughly what happens, I don't need to read further. I'm just not sure I could take any more of Rylee whining after Colton, and Colton's utter BS of "I'm so damaged I can't have relationships." I'm over that story line, and from now on will be reading more reviews to see if that takes place. If it does, the rest of the story better have something pretty darn compelling.

And since I seem to think of myself as a grammar snob at times, the random italics were distracting at times. Also, the. need. to. write. like. this. all. the. time. No one really talks like that in real life. Just stop!

Another series to be addicted to

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. To be honest, I was afraid it was another billionaire romance. Happily there was so much more to the story.

I love sassy Rylee, she is a fabulous character. She is a curvy-ish gal, who is mostly confident. She has bouts of doubt, which is normal for any woman. She is best when she remembers who she is and says to hell with it. I love the banter between her and Colton. It is definitely giggle worthy.

The overall story is engaging, really draws you into the story from the start. I enjoyed the auction and later everything in the boys home. Those were parts that brought more human elements to the romance. Because of Colton's issues, things can be superficial. The back and forth in the relation gets a little redundant. emotions happen quickly and lust is instant.

The smexy stuff is pretty hot and very detailed. Holy hotness! A girl will need a cold shower after reading this one. Well, not the very end, but at several points along the way. The lust is there from the start. Combustible chemistry makes things uber sexy.

The whole book is from Rylee's POV, which limits things tremendously. I kept wanting in on Colton's thoughts. It really would have helped me think of him as more than a bored playboy after the girl who was hard to get. I am sure there is more to him than that, but it is hard to see that from his actions in the end.

I was hoping for a bit more of the race car driving angle. Maybe that is something that comes up in later books as the partnership kicks off.

I listened to the audiobook narrated by Tatiana Sokolov, who is fantastic. I have enjoyed several of her reads in the past. She does a great job with the voices, keeps them distinct without trying to hard to sound like a man. Her pace is swift, but not so fast that it is hard to understand. The energy of the read fits the action of the story perfectly. A delight from beginning to end.

This book is a bit of a cliffhanger ending, in that there is not a HEA, there is a very abrupt break-up. I am still not sure how I feel about that. I like my books all at once, or at least with a Happy For Now ending.

I loved the premise of this fabulously gripping story. A CEO bad-boy offering millions to bind the objective of his desire to a contract...forcing her to have to spend time with him.. (in order for her to collect the money he's donating to her charitable foundation). And the tables are turned. I didn't expect to like this story as much as I do...but it so adeptly snuck itself deep into the grey matter of my head and now I'm addicted to finding out the outcome of Rylee and Colton and experience their healing. Brilliant writing...brilliant plot.

A good book

This book could be very uncomfortable for some readers since the hero, Dominic, has been married to Chloe's aunt since Chloe was a young child. Chloe also spent a lot of time with her aunt and uncle while growing up. I was expecting a quick HEA once they both realized how they felt about each other. That was not what I got (in a good way). I was happy with the plot twists that I did not expect. While I understand that Chloe was only 18 at the beginning, I did not empathize with her at all. It was only after several years and a lot of growing up for her that I began to like her. Dominic was an interesting character in how he dealt with his changing feelings for Chloe and his struggle to come to terms with viewing his "niece" as a woman. I enjoyed the story and characters because they showed real emotions and learned from their mistakes. The internal struggles for each character were not the "woe is me" type that I have trouble with - these characters were realistic in what was happening to them and the consequences of their actions - which I thought was remarkable.

Even though this is a taboo tale of sorts as in some peoples opinions it is not the done thing, there is nothing wrong in this story at all and no intimacy between blooded relations at all ll this is not a story of incest or anything of the kind. It is a tale that shows that two people who are drawn together cannot help how they feel regardless of what other's think. Chloe has loved her Uncle Dominic for a long time and now that he is no longer married to her Aunt Clara, there is nothing to stand in the way of Chloe showing him how she feels about him except for himself. She does not care what others think and hopes he can get passed that too. As the story unfolds you will see this for what it is a true love story of two souls meant to be with each other and have a life entwined together for always. I really enjoyed this story and hope you can get passed any misconceptions the title or genre may give and that you read it and enjoy it for what it is. A love story and that if you are united you can face anything. Happy Reading!

Morris R. Cohen and Ernest Nagel set before themselves aims threefold to be striven for in the formulation of the book. First, they propose that "the present text seeks to bring some order into the confusion of tongues, concerning the subject matter of logic" to dismiss the concern of a "of the mediator between hostile points of view", as "the traditional distrust of peacemaker in the intellectual realm difficult to appreciate, since he so often substitutes an unclear and inconsistent amalgam for points of view which at least have the merit of a certain clarity" (p. xiii). Secondly, they strive to cure the weariness often ascribed "to the study of logic [which] testifies to the unimaginative way logical principles have been taught and misused" by consolidating "sound logical doctrine with sound pedagogy" and providing "illustriative material suggestive of the role of logic in every department of thought" (p. xiv).

Book I, Formal Logic, opens with a clear and undemanding elucidation of some of the principal ideas in relation to the investigation and classification of propositions, and of the connections between propositions (Chs. III and IV). Then follows, in two chapters, a straightforward and conventional (as it should be) exposition of the doctrine of the syllogism and its elaborations. Chapter VI contains an introductory treatment of Generalized or Mathematical Logic, and Chapter VII a rather more advanced but very interestingly presented discussion of The Nature of a Logical or Mathematical System. Chapter VIII introduces Probable Inference, and in this one form of the frequency theory is defended. The concluding chapter of Book I, Some Problems of Logic, is somewhat of the nature of a collection of odds and ends-the Paradox of Inference, the charge of petitio principii against the syllogism, the Laws of Thought, and the basis of logical principles in the nature of things.

Book II, Applied Logic and the Scientific Method, is the Victorian mansion opulently furnished and full of interesting nooks and corners, but in which it is a little demanding to find one's way about and preserve a sense of direction. With few preliminaries a good start is made by a discussion of the role of hypotheses in science (Ch. XII). Progress is slightly slowed, however, by a chapter on Classification and Definition (Ch. XIII). We move forward again at a brisker rate in a reasonably detailed but not too comprehensive chapter on The Methods of Experimental Inquiry (Ch. XIII).

In Chapter XIV, Probability and Induction, a question is raised: What is inductive reasoning? This chapter introduces the problem of sampling and of reasoning from analysis. Chapter XV is on Measurement and Chapter XVI on Statistical Methods. There are then discussions on Probable Inference in History and Allied Inquiries (Ch. XVII), on Logic and Critical Evaluation (Ch. XVIII), and a chapter on Fallacies (Ch. XIX).

Some of the analysis is very well done; more exceptionally where it shoulders to uproot the common misconceptions of beginners. This appertains in Chapter IX, in which the historical demurrals to the syllogism are treated in the section on "The Paradox of Inference", in which Mill's arguments are rejoindered in the section "Is the Syllogism a Petitio Pricipii?" and furthermore where the discourse on "The Laws of Thought" perhaps be summed up in a rephrasing of Russell's expression: The extraordinary thing about Boole's "Laws of Thought" is the reality that no person had ever thought of ruminating in that manner hitherto. It may be stated further that some denunciation of certain pragmatists is (perhaps suitably) disregarded, though Schiller on (p. 438, 457), is submitted as an enquiry for student experimentation and assessment.

Its questions and exercises on each chapter at the end of the book are superb. Outstanding also is the authors' presentation of many of their discussions with classical literary selections. The authors establish a great way a sense of conversational informality between author and reader. There is a quality precis criticism of Aristotelian logic (p. 111); a good rudimentary discourse on the "self-evidence" of axioms (p. 131); a good deliberation on the nature of probable inference (p. 157); a very good discussion on the perils and fallacies of the use of statistics, to be recommended to all statistical fiends (p. 316); a really informing discussion of various abuses to which the scientific method is susceptible (p. 382). The final chapter of the book may function as a basic introduction to the significance and function of science in modern civilization.

Cohen and Nagel have assembled a work which should confer on much to a general interest in logic. A fair balance is arrived between the heed of the college student and the interests of the general reader to both of whom the work should serve to convey the authors' admiration of "the realistic formalism of Aristotle, the scientific penetration of Pierce, the pedagogical soundness of Dewey, and the mathematical rigor of Russell" (p. iv).

It is of little surprise that great economist, Ludwig von Mises, had his students study this book as a prerequisite to their study of economics. It would be wise of modern economic pedagogues to follow suit.

Connecting Logic and Science

There are two things that make this text especially useful to a contemporary reader. The first is that it is among the very few texts on logic that make the explicit connection between logic and inquiry; hence, scientific method itself. This connection is a fundamental aspect of the American movements in philosophy, most specifically Pragmatism. However, works like those by John Dewey did not develop the formal aspects of logic to any significant degree, so this work creates a bridge between the general theory of inquiry, the philosophy of science, and formal logic that Dewey only glossed.

The second point is the price. Thematically, this book compares quite well with Hurley's Intro, which also makes the connections between logic, general inquiry, critical thinking, and scientific method. But much as I like Hurley's book, it is *STAGGERINGLY* expensive. I simply cannot in conscience recomend a text that costs *WELL* over $150.00, however much I might otherwise admire its comprehensiveness. (I've an entire rant about the text book industry that I'll not go into here.)

The Kindle edition is very nicely put together with an active table of contents and all the other goodies one would look for. Things like the ability to search the text at any microscopic level that tickles you as well as adding as many comprehensive annotations and comments as you might like make this electronic version well worth the very reasonable price. There are some typos in the Kindle edition; the process of conversion, especially of texts with technical symbolism in them, is still not perfect. Consequently, this e-book might prove puzzling &/or difficult at places for persons trying to teach themselves the subject on their own.

Per the logic parts, the authors (Cohen and Nagel) spend time on both the syllogism and the more contemporary forms of mathematical logic. They are writing post-"Principia", so their treatment is sufficiently contemporary that any person -- whether enrolled student or autodidact -- will have no trouble translating symbolisms and treatments into the most "fashion forward" dealings with subjects relating to logic. The authors reject any psychologistic or relativistic approach to either logic or science, which is the only move that can even hope to make sense of either. But at the same time, the authors never lose sight of the pedagogical intentions of this book. As such, it remains an accessible and enormously viable teaching instrument, even in contemporary class rooms.

(Any interested individual, with only a little discipline, could also use this as a self-teaching instrument. However, as with any self-teaching process, in the absence of a mentor or teacher the exercises do not answer themselves and any puzzles that arise in the reading would be hurdles to overcome. But this is true of any self-teaching process, so it does not stand as a criticism of the text but merely a reminder to those person's who engage in learning on their own.)

This book can easily serve as an intro to logic, and/or a bridge/supplementary text to philosophy of science for students who have already had an elementary or intro logic class. Any teacher who wishes to engage in education that takes into account the reality that students do not have unbounded resources is, I would argue, morally obligated to return to this text and consider it as a primary teaching instrument. On the other hand, any autodidact could do significantly worse than Cohen and Nagel's brilliant intro to gain a substantive foothold in both logic, philosophy of science, and the very real connections between them.
