An excellent introduction to the oil business

If you're interested in learning about the dynamics of the oil industry and you know absolutely nothing about it, this is the book for you. Norman Hyne describes industry jargon with dictionary-like simplicity and guides you through the basics of oil drilling, where oil is located and why, how to read seismographs, and many other things. The book has photos and drawings throughout the book that help you get a better grasp of what is described.

This book seems to be written as a classroom textbook, but I read it cover-to-cover.

Lots of Conventional

Not as much information as I would have liked to see on unconventional fraccing and drilling that is much more commonly done in today's shale plays. Still a very usefull guide and dictionary of industry terms and concepts.

A good technical textbook without all the math and physics. Practical examples and down to earth explanations make this text relatively easy to understand. If you read this carefully from cover to cover, I dare say you'll be a relative expert on the subject.

American Thought and Culture as Americans Emerged from the Gilded Age and Progressive Era

Whether you are a history buff or a historical fiction writer, if you want to get a sense of the state of science, evolution, philosophy, religion, women, anthropology, racism, and an emerging consumer culture in America as the Gilded Age shifted to The Progressive Era, this is a terrific resource. Well-written and interesting, the book offers extensive and invaluable reference notes for each chapter, a bibliographic essay, and index. If you have access to academic library holdings, the sources referenced in the chapter were extremely helpful in further research of these specific topics as they relate to the time period.

An Uneven Intellectual History of the American Fin de Siecle

This volume, the fourth in the Twayne Modern American Thought and Culture series edited by Lewis Perry and Howard Brick, looks at American intellectual history from 1880-1900. Cotkin covers this ground adeptly and even-handedly, from the pervasive influence of Darwinism on practically every area of human endeavor of the time to the ambiguous place of the woman in intellectual life. The book has its weak points, which I will mention at the end.

The first part of the book is the best and offers some of the clearest insights, though Cotkin never really does get to the heart of the matter in attempting to define what modernism actually is for him. He uses the metaphor of a "tangled bank" - the same one that Darwin used in another context to describe nature. The themes are familiar ones: how our subjects are continually buffeted to and fro between moribund Victorianism and the new, ambiguous, questioning modernism. Cotkin does a superb job of detailing how far-reaching are the ideas of progress, often espoused in the guise of Darwinism. Even the leading liberal religious thinkers of the time - Henry Ward Beecher, Newman Smyth, Octavius Brooks Frothingham - co-opted the idea of progress to create a theology that ministered to the particularly Victorian (not modern) worldview. Former orthodoxy started to become laced with aspects of rationalism, but not necessarily for the scientific pretense it provided; in fact, more often than not, this aspect of religious thought devolved into a calming anodyne for the complacent middle class, an appeal to their fetishization of progress. He covers Pragmatism, that fresh American philosophical tradition, very well, including how its professionalization also led to the development of psychology as its own academic discipline. Even in the realm of psychology the freedom versus determinism debate comes up again, with William Graham Sumner firmly on the side of passively accepting Nature's laws, while William James suggests there is room for human volition.

In one chapter, Cotkin does a fine job in detailing the perhaps not terribly surprising extent to which racism dominated the fields of academic anthropology and ethnology. Lewis Henry Morgan's work with the Iroquois and John Wesley Powell's involvement with the U.S. Geological Survey are also indicative of the search for parallelism, order, and logic that Cotkin has already illustrated. Na�ve optimism was not relegated to the middle-class, however. As James C. Wellington of Columbian College said, "There is a limitless vista opened (though not an absolutely unlimited one) for the prospective working of better laws, purer justice, wiser economics, richer science, and higher morality." By the end of the century, as the influence of Franz Boas grew, anthropology began to slowly slough off its former assumptions and found that "the contextual understanding of culture ... was complex and inexact."

The second half of the book provides information that is just as interesting, but much more derivative. I was introduced to some new names - Frances Benjamin Johnston and Gertrude Kasebier - but the background story has been told much more effectively elsewhere. In the closing chapters, Cotkin touches on the growth of American consumerism, and gives a few quick and insightful sketches of Stephen Crane, Louis Sullivan, Thorstein Veblen, and Edgar Saltus.

For an undergraduate student who is looking for a quick overview of the reigning ideas of the time, this book is perfectly sufficient. The first half is worth reading all the way through for the interesting undercurrents of rationalism and progress Cotkin develops, but the second half should serve mostly as biographical reference material.

About the Author
Walton is professor of Old Testament at Wheaton College Graduate School (beginning Fall 2001). Previously he was professor of Old Testament and Hebrew at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. His several books on the Old Testament include Ancient Israelite Literature in Its Cultural Context, Chronological and Background Charts of the Old Testament and (with Andrew E. Hill) A Survey of the Old Testament.

About the author Matthews is professor of religion at Southwest Missouri State University. He has written several books on the Old Testament, including Manners and Customs in the Bible: An Illustrated Guide to Life in Bible Times, (with James Moyer) The Old Testament: Text and Context and (with Don C. Benjamin) The Social World of Ancient Israel.

Great book! Its a light read and doesn't have footnotes that list the references, but if you need the documentation just pick up Walton's NIV commentary on Genesis. I would highly recommend this book as a quick reference to understand the ancient Near Eastern culture

Unique and surprising - 4.5

Well, if there's one thing to be said about "Nana", it's that the book will sure keep you on your toes. With a large and shifting cast of characters (all of whom seem to revolve around, of course, Nana), Zola wrote the first of his novels that I did not immediately love, but a remarkable, disturbing and bizarre book.

For those coming from "L'Assommoir", it's easy to remember Nana as the girl who starts out adorable and quickly disappears from her parents' lives. For those who haven't read "L'Assommoir" yet, do so now. It's a great book. As for "Nana", it continues with Zola's incredibly detailed style. This writing, which suited me fine in "L'Assommoir" and in "Germinal" (excellent) suddenly seems to drag a little. "Nana" is wickedly brilliant in all the dialogues and the relationships between people. In between, however, the story slows down, at times almost bogging down.

"Nana" presents the highly hypocritical and strange world of the wealthy Parisians at the time of the World Fair. Full of whoring and sex (all of which is, of course, never explicitly described, leaving this book technically "clean", if you don't mind hearing about cross-dressing orgies), "Nana" seems to mock the culture that at once harbors such behavior and simultaneously criticizes it. The reader almost feels sympathy for a struggling Nana, as she wreaks havoc around her. There lies the great genius of Zola's writing - even as the book stumbles, it manages to keep the reader hooked to Nana's story and wondering what strange scene will come next.

"Nana" is a clever, interesting book. Offering a view of Parisian theatrics and "wealthy" life, it also presents hypocrisy, debauchery and female strength - Nana repeatedly proves to the men around her that she does not need them, that she can rely and survive by herself. It's an important addition to the Rougon-Macquart cycle, telling one more French tale. It's a special, fascinating, enrapturing book. Still, it does not manage to cast the same spell as "Germinal" and "L'Assommoir". While I recommend this wholeheartedly, I suggest readers start with those two great books first. Regardless, "Nana" is a unique and surprising book about whoring in Paris - 4.5.

gender-reversal during the decline of the Second Empire

In this novel, one of Zola's five or six "great books" about life during the Second Empire of France, we see a great number of men fall under the destructive influence of Nana, a demimonde who rose to fame from the backstreets of Paris. Nana is a prostitute, performer, socialite and celebrity all in one, making for a massive force of destruction. While every bit as earthy (and then some) as "L'Assommoir," this story is not quite as grim; depending on your sense of humor, it is also funnier.

For 1880, the descriptions of Nana's numerous trysts, games and affairs are, um, rather progressive, but this is a result of Zola's "naturalist" style. He collected copious notes on real figures at the time, and stood by the accuracy of his details. Nana did actually exist as a demimonde (or maybe a few), hastening the decadence of Napoleon III's France.

The back cover misleadingly advertises this story is a "poem of male desires," when it is Nana's desires and ambitions which drive the plot and dominate the imagery. Like no other book that I've read, "Nana" reverses the gender roles of its characters; with a fair amount of cross-dressing, homosexuality, physical abuse and assorted perversions. There are some dramatic scenes of degradation of Nana's men which are either 1.) some measure of revenge on men (Nana's mother experienced a lot of abuse in "L'Assommoir"), 2.) revenge on the wealthy, or 3.) expressions of boredom. Fans of "Fear Factor" might appreciate.

Zola's themes have a lot of parallels today: decadence, fear of aging, and destructive affairs (look at what a divorce proceeding did to General Electric's share price). I had no problem with the translation by Mr. Holden, and the story is certainly not boring. "Nana" is probably not for anyone, certainly not for younger readers, but it deserves its reputation as a great book.

Jeffry Borror has been developing technology solutions in Financial Services for 30 years. After completing his doctorate in mathematics at Columbia University and an initial stint at IBM, Jeff began a managerial career on Wall Street and has worked for a number of major firms in the financial sector. After the 9/11 tragedy he took a year off to perform volunteer work at a not-for-profit organization in lower Manhattan and then founded the consulting firm, Continuux LLC. He began writing a tutorial for the q programming language in 2006, which evolved into the current book. It is the basis of training in q and kdb+ offered by Continuux LLC.

I wish it went beyond syntax

The book is available on the Kx Systems site, so you can make up your mind on whether you like it, and whether the convenience of having a hardcopy is worth the price. I like Borror's writing, but I wish the book gave more space to examples illustrating programming rather than syntax. ('Q Idioms' page on kx.com is what I have in mind). Trying one's hand on code snippets from the Kx site makes the gap painfully obvious.

Everything you need to get started with KDB+ Q

This book is highly technical in nature and removes the fluff that other tech books often use to fill pages. This book includes everything you needs to know to get started with KDB+ Q and also includes includes more advanced topics that can be used to improve your system already using KDB+ Q. Readers of this book will benefit the most if they are implementing a solution to capture and manage financial tick data in a way that it can be analyzed in real-time analysis or back testing trading strategies. It would help the reader, but is not required, if they have a strong knowledge/education in some or all of the following: quantitative methods, computer science, and financial markets so they can visualize scenarios where KDB+ will be the most advantageous. Personally, I have used this book as a reference on consulting assignments many times. All joking aside, I view this book as being so important to my development, I have two copies. One copy that I carry with me when consulting and the other at home just in case anything happens to the first copy. If you want to stand out in financial IT KDB+ is the niche skill to learn.

Excellent for handling tick data

If you have a massive data set of tick data (Trades and Quotes, for instance), you'll need KDB to store and organize it. KDB is not a relational data base as SQL is, because the data is sorted (Date, then Symbol, then Time Stamp are the natural fields you should use to sort TAQ data). This makes querying the data extremely efficient, which allows you to run very large simulations (backtesting trading strategies, for instance) in viable time. Q is the language that naturally talks to KDB, and it makes writing such large simulations a relatively easy job.

However, Q is somewhat cryptic, so the entry cost is quite high, actually. You'll nee a lot of time practicing it in order to master it well. It's worth, though.

Beware that documentation on Q is scarce. This is not the most well written book, but it's all you got.
