useful electrical construction book

I found this is a useful electrical construction book for Electrical Contractors, Electrical designers and Electrical Engineers.

It provides a table of the electrical loads of typical electrical devices and provides the method for calculating the loads, for that alone it is good to purchase. The book is mostly used to put the correct information on the drawings to get approved by the building department and to purchase the correct material for the electrical job.

It's not a primer for rookies unless use with proper instruction. It useful for learning to read Electrical Drawings. It does a good job on providing information for designing electrical small and large buildings from the service up. It touches on Fuses, Breakers, services, Lighting, motors, branch circuits and feeders. It has some good information on doing short circuit calculations and touches on coordination. It even provides a typical set of Electrical Drawings and typical offices.

It full of useful tables, illustrations and pictures to speed up design. I found it simple to use and found a person using this book on u tube that uses this book as a guide. What I liked about this book is that it is easy to read and does not get loaded down with a lots of NEC references or techno babble but does have the most required NEC references to do the job.

This is not a book for passing NEC code. It is for working document. I was surprised to find it. I found it while viewing a course on utube on "short circuit calculations by hand".

All in all it's not bad a book and is good for an advance course or refresher course on Electrical Construction Methods and Designs.

Great book for electrical engineers and technicians

Ok , being honest -- yes , this book has some typos especially when refering to drawings in the book but most of them are self evident. Let me say this -- this book will teach you electrical concepts -- the why and how electrical installations are done and equipment selected unlike other books . The flow of the book is so good that I can't stop reading it . I have been reading it now for a week straight . I am going to buy other books from these authors and from this publisher . Let me just say one thing -- if you plan on getting into the commercial and industrial electrical field, you WILL need this book . It is 600+ pages which says something and not a 150 page book which other reviewers will promote but you know that such a book never does justice to the subject . 600+ pages -- great authors and explanation of concepts , practical examples, pictures, code references -- what more could you ask ? Do yourself a favor and buy this . You cannot be without it on your job if you want to get ahead . If you don't , well , I can't help you .

Excellent Textbook. Well worth reading.

Excellent text on commercial wiring--one of the few out there. Well written and well illustrated. I am an experienced residential contractor and wanted a succinct introduction to commercial wiring and this book is exactly that. For a more in-depth study you'll need to invest in subject-specific texts (like transformers or power correction, etc.).

It was well worth the money and one I'll keep.

Great for Would-be and New Freelancers

For those wanting the punchline first: This book is a great starting point for would-be freelancers looking to begin their professional career on freelancing websites, specifically Upwork (formerly oDesk) and Elance. To note, though, much of what Diana describes in her book is good advice for freelancers in general (beyond the specific websites).

Now to the specifics…

Disclosure note: I was one of Diana’s early readers and was provided with a free, pre-published copy of this book.

In her book, Diana provides experiential advice based on her observations and numerous paid projects while working on the two sites mentioned.

Some points are objective, while some are subjective. (Again, the book is based on her experience.) And though I may have differing perspectives on some of her subjective points, the reasoning she provides and the caveats she mentions about her personal experience help round out the soundness of those points. ("Your mileage may vary" as the saying goes.)

What is really useful is the step-by-step format in which she wrote the book. This clearly fits with her target audience: Would-be and new freelancers. She provides practical and easy-to-follow advice such freelancers can consider and implement as they read along.

My favorite parts of the book were when Diana focused on two areas that I champion in my daily life:
1. The importance of effective communication; and
2. Asking questions.

As a writer and avid communicator, I have found that these two areas are essential to successful business dealings. And freelancers must remember that business dealings, professional agreements, work for hires, or whatever you want to call them, are what you are involved in. Neglecting that fact can quickly lead you to a road of ruin and a failed freelance career.

Diana does a great job of driving these two areas home throughout her book, which is what kept me reading. Understanding the importance of these spoke to me because I believe in them wholeheartedly and practice them every day (both professionally and personally).

Finally, I appreciated the fact that Diana did not offer up some magic method or supposed get-rich-quick scheme in freelancing. She clearly recognizes that freelancing, much like traditional work, has its benefits and drawbacks and takes real effort to succeed. How much and the type of effort involved, of course, depends on the individual. However, she offers a guiding path to take to avoid certain pitfalls and capitalize on her experience to make your foundation-building efforts worthwhile.

Overall, a great read! I wish Diana the best with this book, and I wish you readers the best in using her advice to begin successful and fulfilling freelance careers.

A Must-Have Compass to Freelancing

This book really is a good resource to “begin and develop a lucrative freelance practice on oDesk and Elance.” as the author mentioned in this book. The author is also right about setting your intentions right with this book because if you think your freelance practice will take off in an instant after reading this book, you’re in for a disappointing ride. This book is like the trustee map you’d bring in your travels. It’s your kickstart bible. You go back to it when you need to and it will guide you to the right direction.

I’ve been a freelancer for a couple of years now and reading this made me realize a lot of the mistakes and incorrect assumptions I’ve made. Fortunately, with this book, I’m able to identify those mistakes and correct them moving forward; giving me advantage versus other freelancers. I’m also at the stage in my freelance practice where I’m trying to make money work for me instead of the other way around so that my quality of life is not sacrificed in the process. This book just gave me a head start and I can’t be more thankful for the author for including that aspect of freelancing.

Another part of this book that I would love to highlight in this review is how she breaks down the type of clients freelancers encounter along the way. This is so helpful in more ways than one and if you are just starting out or have already established a good freelancer reputation, you’d greatly benefit from this information.

It also helps to do the things that I was hesitant about at first but now know are right after all. This book will definitely get you going. Consider this a freelancer’s best friend and adviser. Grab your copy now if in your heart of hearts, you want to live a fulfilling life and have a sustainable one at the same time. There are valuable truths a freelancer will take away from this book that you won’t find elsewhere because that’s just not easy to compile especially if that person you’re reading it from doesn’t know what he or she is talking about or has not simply had any experience with freelancing at all.

About the Author
Steve Zumdahl is the author of market-leading textbooks in introductory chemistry, general chemistry, honors-level chemistry, and high school chemistry. Recently retired from his long-time position as Director of Undergraduate Programs at the University of Illinois, he has received numerous awards for his contributions to chemical education. These include the National Catalyst Award in recognition of his contribution to chemical education, the University of Illinois Teaching Award, the UIUC Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising Award, and the School of Chemical Sciences Teaching Award (five times). He earned his B.S. in Chemistry from Wheaton College (IL), and his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Susan A. Zumdahl earned a B.S. and M.A. in Chemistry at California State University--Fullerton. She has taught science and mathematics at all levels, including middle school, high school, community college, and university. She is past director of the Merit Program for Emerging Scholars in Chemistry at the University of Illinois. In addition, she spearheaded the development of a sophisticated web-based electronic homework system for chemistry and is co-author on several chemistry textbooks.
