About the Author

Dr Ben Daniel is a Senior Lecturer in Higher Education, and heads the Educational Technology Group at the University of Otago―New Zealand. In 2007 he completed his Ph.D. jointly in Computer Science and Educational Technology at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada.

Previously, Dr Daniel was a Lecturer and a Senior Health Research and Innovation Analyst with the Office of Associate Vice President Research-Health (University of Saskatchewan)/Vice President Research and Innovation (Saskatoon Health Region)―Saskatoon, Canada. For over a decade Dr Daniel taught undergraduate, postgraduate students, academic staff, and Senior Corporate Executives on Research Methodologies; Program Evaluation and Logic Modelling; Quality Improvement, Statistics and Biostatistics as well as Advanced Learning Technologies.

An active researcher, Dr Daniel has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications (2 edited books, 2 authored book, 13 book chapters, 10 peer-reviewed journal articles, 26 peer-reviewed conference papers, 10 peer-reviewed workshops and posters, and over 10 technical reports). His current research is focused generally on exploring the value of Big Data and learning analytics in influencing learning, teaching and research in the context of higher education. This is truly essential. Cannot recommend enough.

If you are a graduate student, considering graduate school, a faculty member, academic support, academic administration, or human; you need to read this book. The American academy is broken. I say this as one of the lucky few with a tenure track job. A system of graduate education was created in a time with circumstances that no longer exist. As Karen Kelsky explains in the opening chapters, the path to secure employment via a doctoral degree is a rocky one with a very uncertain outcome. For those that choose to pursue it, this book (and Kelsky's blog and social media profiles) provides a frank, honest, and accurate description of what it takes to get something out of the doctoral experience.

Highlights:
- The scope of this book could have been problematic. Yet somehow Kelsky pulled it off: covering what it takes to get a tenure track job, the job market process, and throws in some additional material on grants and leaving the academy.
- The job market process chapters are incredibly detail oriented and this is a very good thing. The academic job interview is unlike anything anyone has experienced before. I'm certain this book will make interviews less scary.
- Some of the chapters are elaborations on Kelsky's blog posts (some of which may not be available online anymore), but this is the minority of the content in the book. Moreover, the overarching themes and lessons of the book make the material useful, even to those that had read the blog post previously.
- Kelsky is telling the ugly truth about the reality of the job market process. Yet, unlike many academic pundits, she also gives proven strategies for dealing with reality. We would all like things to be better, but until then, we have to work within the system. Kelsey gives you ways to do that.
- Occasionally Kelsky's experience as an anthropologist does not resonate with my experience in a different field. Almost always Kelsky acknowledges when there are disciplinary or paradigmatic differences and suggests that the reader knows her field.

This book may frighten some people. But it is absolutely essential that anyone that is a part of this process understands how this works. I read the book as a veteran of Kelsky's blog and consulting. I suspect that reading the entire book would be challenging and/or overwhelming for a young graduate student. I would suggest that an early graduate student read Part I, II, III, and IV carefully and skim the rest for familiarity. A graduate student that successfully passes exams should re-read Parts I-IV and then read V-VII carefully. Parts VIII-X are more topic-specific, but are excellent resources for any scholar.
I believe that faculty should read this entire book with a goal of being better advisors and better academic community members. We all need to take responsibility for the system that currently exists and Kelsky's book (and other work) may be a good starting point for trying to resolve some of the problems - either as individuals or systematically.

I sincerely hope that Kelsky can carve out time from her consulting work to write a similar book about life on the tenure track and getting tenure. Her blog posts on this topic are fantastic and I suspect that it would be a good "second project" ;) for her. We all desperately need this sort of frankness and guidance.

Essential guide, indeed

While it masquerades as an academic advisory, this book is really a paean to a universal truth: other people are more interested in their needs than yours. If you want to be hired, you need to show them quickly and succinctly how you add value, and you need to do it in their terms. Kelsky conveys this results-oriented mindset with practical advice in a manner that's both frank and edifying. Her book is a mental reset and, to my mind, a useful read even outside of academia.

Indispensable for those considering graduate school, those in it, and those who are considering leaving it (plus their mentors)

I'm an avid reader of Kelsky's blog and purchased this book fairly certain of what it would contain, My high expectations were certainly met. While the book did not contain much information that was "startlingly new," its breadth and depth earn the book its place on my bookshelf. I'm certainly happy to have all of this information in one place so that I can share chapters with colleagues, friends, and students.

Kelsky has written a book designed to empower PhD students who are facing a bleak academic job market. She doesn't guarantee that her readers will earn a "coveted" tenure-track position by reading the book - nor is that her goal. Her mission is to help PhDs get a job, be it academia, alt-ac, or non-ac; and she does this by detailing what job candidates need to know about academia. The readers of her blog or columns in The Chronicle will not be surprised by this goal, nor should they be. Kelsky is an avowed advocate for PhD students and recent graduates who are struggling on the market because they need more guidance.

The book is written for all academic fields, but Kelsky also calls attention to some of the dire conditions in the humanities, and how that may affect PhD candidates and job seekers.

The bulk of the book focuses on preparing for jobs in academia, but it also provides information on leaving academia and finding other ways to utilize the PhD. The book is broken down into ten parts covering everything those looking at the tenure-track need to know, including types of academic institutions (R1/SLACs/R2/etc.), job market documents, offer negotiations, grant writing, and how/when/why to leave academia altogether.

For those who are familiar with her blog, here are the biggest bonuses of her book:
* More real-life examples from emails, letters, and in person conversations Kelsky has had over the years.
* Chapter 4 details how the academic search process works from the university/department side - a land few grads may know as intimately as Kelsky explains.
* Figuring out a 5-year plan and determining what issues of the minutiae of graduate school life will distract you from the goal of making your CV the strongest it can be for the job market.
* Creating your “campaign platform” for the job market
* More specific information on crafting your elevator speech
* Key questions to prepare for in an academic interview (and how to tackle Skype and on-campus interviews)
* Answers the question of what to do when you don’t feel like you belong in academia, for myriad reasons including elitism, racism, gender, sexuality, imposter syndrome, and more

Most importantly for me, having all of this information in one compact book means I have a go-to present for my favorite students who giddily tell me that they want to become a professor. I don't want to discourage them like my undergraduate advisers tried to do to me, but I do want them to be well-informed about what the graduate-school-to-tenure-track life is like. I love having genuinely curious and bright students be interested in becoming a professional in my field (history), but I don't think it necessary that they see "professor" as the only meaningful way to study history or be a historian. I'm glad Kelsky has deepened my understanding of the nuances involved in mentoring students and being a student myself, as well as giving practical and thoughtful advice.

On another note, the book also provides me with a good stocking-stuffer for my non-academic parents who still wonder why I’m “in school” after so many years, and why my work schedule doesn't follow the 9-5 they're used to. I may even send a copy to my adviser.

Davies book is a clearly written, economical explication of Aquinas’s thoughts on God and evil. He takes up passages and arguments from all over Aquinas’s corpus and gathers them together into a systematic account. It’s very accessible and packs a lot into a short book (it’s about 130 pages, not including the footnotes).

His goal is, I think, in large part to show how Aquinas might have addressed what is commonly called “the problem of evil”, that is “how can God–who is thought to be good, loving, omnipotent, omniscient, etc.–allow evil in the world?” As Davies presents it, Aquinas offers a convincing argument for why the existence of evil is not incompatible with the existence of a good, loving God.

He first has to spend some time clarifying and developing the philosophical machinery Aquinas uses (e.g. what is being, good, evil, cause, what can we know about God?) before addressing the major questions about God and evil. In doing so, he covers a lot of territory, making this a good introduction not just to Aquinas on God and evil but to Aquinas’s thought in general.

Davies says in the preface that he wants to “offer an account of Aquinas’s teachings on the topic of God and evil while trying to place him in the context of contemporary discussions”. It’s an account which is very different from those espoused in most contemporary discussions, and one well worth reading.

Good Introduction to God and Evil

The reason I found this book helpful is because it does a pretty good job presenting Davies' interpretation of Saint Thomas Aquinas' view on God and evil, although I have not studied Aquinas' view any further than casually reading his book, Summa Theologica Book One. Davies thinks that Aquinas' approach to God and evil is the correct one. Davies examines and explains both what Aquinas meant to say and what he did not mean to say. Davies compares Aquinas' view on things such as good and bad, existence and essence, and occurring naturally and occurring accidentally. "For something to have essence, Aquinas thinks, it actually has to exist." He helps the reader to understand certain terms Aquinas uses such as esse, actually existing without being the source of its being actual. The word 'malum' is used when making reference to evil or badness. Malum ponenae refers to evil suffered, and malum culpae refers to evil done, both of which are not directly caused by God. In my opinion, the book falls short on examining different types of bad, evil, and suffering, or rather, perhaps Aquinas fell short on examining various cases of bad, evil, and suffering. There is a type of suffering for righteousness that is done with all strength and joy, which is not explored at all. The concept of 'satan' and the 'devil' is not mentioned at all, which is quite odd when trying to talk about evil. It sounds as though Aquinas is extremely cautious not to belittle evil and what to do about it. However, in my opinion, we can't dance around evil or avoid tackling it head on. The emphasis is more on how God exists in spite of there being evil in the world, and that God does not cause evil directly, and that God is still the highest good. For anyone who wants a lot of good facts about God and evil, or anyone who wants to get a taste for Aquinas' view on the matter, this book is pretty good.

Author Brian Davies provides a large amount of interesting notes in the back 1/3 of the book. It is a good mix of sources, definitions, analysis, and opinions. This book is a good introduction to God and evil, but not necessarily how to handle it or what to do about it.

Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect plants from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.

About the Author
Dr. Olle Selinus is a Ph.D. geologist working with the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU). During the 1960s and 1970s he worked in mineral exploration and since the beginning of the 1980s his research work has been focused on environmental geochemistry, including research on medical geology. He has served as the organizer of several international conferences in this field, is vice president for the International Geological Congress in Oslo in 2008 and has published over 90 manuscripts. Dr. Selinus is currently the dep. Head of the Geochemical Division at SGU and in charge of research and development at the geological survey. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the book on Essentials of Medical Geology, and as president of the International Medical Geology Association. He has received several international awards and has been appointed Geologist of the Year (2005) in Sweden because of Medical Geology. He is also chairing the Earth and Health team of the United Nations initiative International Year of Planet Earth, member of the organising committee and vice president for the 33 International Geological Congress in Oslo in 2008, vice chairman of the National Committee of Geology at Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, chairman of the Swedish National Committee of the International Year of Planet Earth at the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences.

Cutting Edge Resource for the Geo-Epidemiologist(?) or Environmental/Public Health Practitioner

I don't know of any other international medical reference that incorporates an appreciation for the broad impacts of geology on health like this title. Yes, there are obscure GEOCHEMISTRY AND HEALTH volumes available, but they don't compare with the useful variety of chapters present here. Even at the local jurisdiction where I'm employed, the chapters on radon, fluoride in natural waters, water hardness, soil-borne pathogens, epidemiology, groundwater modelling, and toxicology are handy refreshers.
There's a great deal here and a good portion is geared toward the needs of third world practitioners (iodine deficiencies, geophagy, elements in nutrition, arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh, volcanic emissions, etc)

The map of radon risks in the Czech Republic was of particular interest (for my relatives as well). See also what aerosolic mineral dusts are doing to the Chinese population in chapter 18.

Another plug for geography:
While rightfully geographic, not geologic techniques, the editors include remote sensing techniques and GIS mapping for vector borne diseaes, but these spatial/graphic techniques will continue to grow in importance for other issues in medical geology.

The bible, full of knowledge that will protect public health

There is nothing else that compares to this concise introduction to the subject. I have no doubt it will help to increase your awareness of the importance of the interaction of mammalian systems with our natural environment. Highly accessible and nicely illustrated -- it is evident that a team of dedicated medics and geoscientists invested long nights editing and minimizing jargon. For this the world should be thankful! This 800+ page full-color tome highlights some of the significant interfaces of medicine and earth science. Most of the topics are fascinating, such as Skinner's review of the 'Mineralogy of Bone'. If you forgot what geophagy is, look no further than Peter Abrahams chapter. So finally there is an accessible primer for medical schools, I might predict that several institutions will begin using Selinus for courses in medical geology. The book's organization has laid a nice foundation for this emerging transdisciplinary study. The seven editors and some 50 contributors should be congratulated for sharing a common vision to its fruition. At 12 cents a page, I love it!!!!

FYI - Lastly, you should be aware that there is another book published by L-severe that has the title 'Medical Geology' (by Komatina). It is not worth a nickel and should be recycled, as it was poorly translated and largely ambiguous and full of errors. The translator should be taken out to the back and shot.
