However, they also attempt to respond to the destabilizing impact of Nietzschean and postmodernist thought. The writing is addressed to those engaged in, or with some interest in, academic philosophy and draws on a wide range of philosophical source materials, but avoids unnecessary technicality. In the same way, it should appeal to those with a pre-existing interest in academic feminism (and in some forms of feminist activism), but could also serve to draw new readers into the domain of feminist thought.

Sabina Lovibond is an Emeritus Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford, where she taught Philosophy from 1982 to 2011. She is the author of Realism and Imagination in Ethics (1983), Ethical Formation (2002), and Iris Murdoch, Gender and Philosophy (2011). Her work has been mainly in ethics and feminist theory, but with some continuing influence from ancient philosophy and from the later philosophy of Wittgenstein.

Only half a book

I already have George's CR 8.5 book and I think its great. When I saw the description for this book I was very interested in reading it. Unfortunately, once I got the book in my hands I was let down.
As I went through the chapters I saw that it was really a "Tips and Tricks" book. This is mostly stuff that I already read in his 8.5 book. So I didn't see much new information. But the really bad part was when I got to page 200. The book was over! Yes, this "400" page book is only 200 pages.
The last 200 pages are a printout of the Crystal help file. I've read books that have what I consider too many tables copied out of a help file. But this book goes over the top by having a full 50% of its content being a copy of the help file. What was George and his publisher thinking? It reminds me of the Tom Petty song The Last DJ, "The guys at the top want to see how much you'll pay for what you used to get for free."
In summary, the first half of the book is a lot of repeated tips from his 8.5 book. The second half of the book is worthless. If you want a good CR book, get George's 8.5 or 9.0 book and pass this one by. I'm shocked to see that a great CR author such as George put with his name on the cover.

Crystal Guru in a Book

If you're just getting started with Crystal Reports, you've had some introductory training and know your way around the basics fairly well, but you're just not sure if some particular thing is possible or how to do it, this is the book for you. (Even if you are not just getting started!) Some of us are lucky and have a Crystal guru in the cubicle next door for those one-off questions; the rest can look them up in this book.
The first half of the book is tips and tricks, some more tricky than others, but all in the realm of good-to-know. I consider myself a sophisticated Crystal Reports developer and yet I found tidbits of knowledge that I had never come across before. The topics covered are broad, encompassing report formatting, formula creation, grouping enhancements, and more. Putting just some of the tips into practice will make you look like the guru.
The second half of the book is a Crystal Reports formula reference that I did not find much more helpful than the Crystal Reports help files. However, the tips section is more than worth the price of the book!

Good tips - but lots of repetition

The author of this book is also the author of the various editions of the standard 'Crystal Reports: The Complete Guide' book. This book tries to pick up where that book left off--in other words, this book tries to be a resource for intermediate to advanced users.

The book does present numerous interesting tips and a few really useful strategies for report development. However, the examples are not particularly thorough and there simply are not enough of them to really cover the breadth of the product. If used as an "idea-generator" book for a mid-level developer it would be useful, but it is not a comprehensive guide to advanced techniques.

As other reviewers have already mentioned, about half of the book is just reprinted information from the electronic help files that are included with Crystal Reports. Of course having them nicely organized and bound in printed form is very useful--but the book is pretty pricey for a simple reference manual.

I read and enjoyed the book, I learned a few things and it gave me some ideas, but in general it was a bit dissappointing. If work's buying it for you--great! If it's your own money--well, you might wish you hadn't spent it.

Nice but flawed book

Japanese Fashion Designers (the work and influence of Issey Miyake, Yohji Yamamoto, and Rei Kawakubo) is a nice book especially for the price. One MAJOR flaw is that each designer get a section of their own with a photo of the designer at the beginning of the chapeter, well Issey Miyake's is wrong. It's not a picture of Issey Miyake, but of Naoki Takizawa (a former Issey Miyake designer). It's sad that the writer/editor did NOT notice this. How you can NOT tell that the photo is not of Issey Miyake? Very idiotic!

Outside of that the book is pretty good with info on newer designers. One of my personal favorites being Tao Kurihara (sadly she does not have her own line, Tao, anymore. It also has wonderful sections on the Japanese influence on Dutch and Belgian designers.

I do recommend the book, but that mislabeled photo is a BIG BIG screw up!!!!

Good info, well researched but flawed book.

This book is the perfect starting point if you want to do research on the japanese fashion/clothing designers and their work. It explains much not only about their work in general but also about their techniques and philosophies.

However, as the other reviewer pointed out, the book is flawed. My copy is missing pages 17-48 and substituted them with pages 81-112, which are again repeated in the order later on. This proved to be a major stepback in my research. I don't believe I can return the book as I already marked it with my notes.

Wikipedia does a better job than this author

Such an immensely disappointing read. The book is very small, with grainy black and white photos, and small font. The text about each designer is broad, and not informative. Wikipedia does a better job than this author, which is sad. I consider myself a novice of Japanese design, but I'm very interested in it, so it's unfortunate when you buy a book a don't learn much from it. Buyer beware- it's a total waste of money.

This is not just a book, it really creates a unique reading experience for kids. This book is so different from anything else out there, I absolutely love it. We love reading it with the flashlight while we hang out in my sons tent! I have no doubt this will be one of those books my son always remembers his whole life, because it really just creates such a memorable and fun experience for little minds.

A Roadmap for Trading Success

This is a very good book. Trading is challenging for most people because they simply don't have tools or confidence to successful. Llewelyn James has put together a book that solves these problems and others. This book covers so many topics it's difficult to really do it justice in a short review. I have done many of the things new traders do: read books, watch videos, attend seminars, subscribe to newsletters, learn technical analysis and so on. Indeed, I found myself smiling at some of the things the author identifies as either mistakes are activities of low value because I recognized an earlier version of myself in those descriptions. Most of the information you get out there is really designed to enrich the trainer without really leaving the trainee with the necessary tools and proper thinking in order to be successful. There is no magic solution or some voodoo indicator that will bring you success because if there was, it would quickly be learned by an uncountable number of traders and then arbitraged into uselessness. That is why this book is important - it tells it like it is. And then, after giving you the straight goods on what the markets is really like, and what you can realistically expect, the author goes on to explain what to do about it. It's like having an experienced trader sit down with you and say: "This is what it is, this is why it is, these are the tools you need, this is how you use them and this is why". Remarkably, the training and tools that you will get are essentially free. Yeah, the book costs a couple bucks but that's a stupidly low price for what you get. Talking about the cost of the book doesn't make sense. The value is so high compared to the price that you should just read it. Clearly the author is not in it for the money (like 99% of the rest of the industry). Read it just to see how a real trader thinks and approaches the market or read it because you really don't know what you are doing and this book will tell you. Whatever the reason, you will learn something by reading it.

One of the major highlights of this book are the fantastic tools. The websites (all free), the training videos (free again) and the decorrelated trading systems (yep, free) offer just about anyone something new to look at and consider. I found it interesting to see how the author set up the websites and how he uses the tools on those websites.

Another big highlight was the backtesting. This is something so many books don't even consider (many other trading books show patterns and indicators and how to use them but there is never any indication about testable expectation of profit). If you want to trade in the market, you should at least have some expectation of profit and a reason for that expectation. Otherwise, it's just random trading. Proper backtesting gives you the confidence to move forward in the markets and the author has done a commendable job in introducing the reader to what is needed to develop this skill.

The author also covers a lot of other need-to-know trading knowledge. In the markets, you can't manage return but you can manage risk. Proper risk management will save you long enough for you to be successful. The author does a good job of explaining where to put the stops and what position size to use.
This book is an introductory/intermediate course in trading. At any point, you could jump off and do a deeper study of the many topics presented.

So if you want a quick start that gets you safely started with credible processes and realistic expectations, then you won't go wrong reading this book. If you are not successful in your trading or if you are looking to start trading, this book will help you along the road to trading success.

A truly practical, intelligent and 'honest' approach to stock trading for novice investors

This book is a complete road map for anyone serious about learning how to research and trade stocks with just a handful of technical tools with some fundamentals added. This book is not about day trading.

In his own words, the author's goal is "...to cut losing trades quickly and let winning trades run without getting scared and hitting the 'take' profit button."

There is no expensive software to buy or monthly newsletters to subscribe to.

The author provides all the necessary free websites you can access to set up your own stock screening chart templates. He goes to great lengths on how set up each template and how to incorporate them into his proven trading strategies. All his explanations are clear and concise. The only concept I at first had trouble grasping was his use of the word leverage, meaning account margin.

If you know absolutely nothing about stock trading the author first gives you a website you can look up and in a couple hours you will understand most of the terms used in this book. In addition, throughout the book the author suggests all these other wonderful books to read for further reference.

There are literally thousands of books on the subject of stock trading. Only a few I could recommend, especially for the novice Trader. And this book is one of them!!!

Llewelyn definitely sounds like a trader who has been around the block, and he doesn't try to sugarcoat things. He gives it to you straight. Very easy to read, too - the author has a very developed writing style. Reading this book is a must!

Three Books in One

The previous reviewer complained about the price of Hayden's book yet said it's a `masterful work'. Indeed Hayden has packed his big book with information, both text and graphics. So think of it as `three books in one' and its price won't seem so `outrageous'.

Hayden explores how the adoption of religions was propelled by `politics' not only among the early egalitarian hunter-gatherers but especially the later hierarchical societies right on up to the present time. He's organized his book so the reader can sample as much or as little information as desired, by providing subject captions as well as summaries at the ends of the chapters. His descriptions are well written and personable, and fully referenced.

What I didn't find adequately explained is why we humans are susceptible to belief in gods, which I explore in my book, "Concepts: A ProtoTheist Quest for Science-Minded Skeptics."

Masterful overview of religion origins and development

In this masterful work, Hayden, by using ecological (i.e. materialistic) factors, tries to portray (and, as far as I am concerned, he achieves his goal) an engaging approach of how religion originated and developed from prehistoric times to the foundations of early civilizations (but including a final synthesis of religions' situation in our times). To put it in a nutshell, his basic belief is that social competition is the driving force of cultural change, and that also applies to religions. He also emphasizes the relevance of ecstatic experiences practiced all over the world, from shamanic cultures to predatory modern cults. It is to take into account that, although he lets aside book religions, his analysis of Christianity (past and present) is lucid and (because of that, perhaps unintentionally?) depicts an image that probably many will find rather negative, even sour.

Besides, the book is not a difficult reading (content: 5 starts; pleasure of reading: 4 to 3).

My only strong complaint about the book is its outrageous price. One hopes the publisher will issue a reasonably priced paperback edition soon, so that this timely and important work will get the wide circulation which it so clearly merits.

Other books I would recommend to read are the following: "The Phenomenon of Religion", by Moojan Momen; "Ecstasies: Deciphering the witches' Sabbath", by Carlo Ginzburg; "The Magical Universe : Everyday Ritual and Magic in Pre-Modern Europe", by Stephen Wilson; and "Cosmos, Chaos, and the World to Come", by Norman Cohn.

thorough but confused

The book is a long haul, comprehensive, and thoroughly documented. Unfortunately the author repeatedly slips into his own apparent conviction that many of our forebears magical beliefs have actual merit and truth. He confuses brain hallucinations with reality outside the brain. Although he reaffirms this belief in the final summation chapter, the bulk of the book traces the development of religion over the centuries with handy references embedded in the text for anyone eager to research the details.

Our human history of the development of religion is anything but proud. We see the rise of human and animal sacrifice, the rise of elitism and secrecy. We see the rise of ego-maniacs, the wasting of resources, the consolidation of political power. The book is sprinkled liberally with speculation as is much of archaeology itself, but the author fairly notes contrary interpretations appropriately and includes references. The book is somewhat dated and the field itself has advanced since its publication, but I think the basics remain valid.

Finally, although it was not the author's intention, I found the book the best support for atheism I've ever read.

Hands-on high-voltage experimentalists interested in electrostatic machines will love this book. Filled with design plans for building electrostatic generators and various high-voltage components, this book provides the necessary details to construct these devices. Like the first two editions, there are detailed plans describing the construction of a Wimhurst machine. This edition however, details a more simplified but larger and improved version than previously described. There is also now an entire chapter devoted to Van de Graff generators describing the principles of operation, construction, modifications for improvement, and making accessories. There are many illustrations and photos describing the construction of these generators as well as methods for making electroscopes, large capacitors, and an electrophorus. There are many tips and tricks revealed that show how to make various parts like high-voltage corona spheres, shorting rods, and terminals. Other topics include electrostatic motors, cold light, levitation, exploding wire experiments, and historical notes on unusual electric discharges. A revised bibliography and materials supplier list also made in this new edition.

Nicely done book on electrostatics

There's a lot of material floating around the web and bookstores that deals with Tesla and related topics. However, when it comes to good old fashion electro-statics, there is no where near the same volume of information. In fact, I've found four books pretty much cover the field -- at least for my money. Something to consider when contemplating a purchase of books on niche subjects such as electrostatics, books tend to go out of print rather fast. The print runs are small, and often the author or publisher will not reprint. This means, get the book while you can. It might be oop and only available on the secondary collectors market later.

Homemade Lightning (R.A. Ford) -- If you are interested in putting together an electrostatic device, this is the book for you. Lots of how-to with pictures and explanation. I think as a first book this is your best bet. And as a book for creating running examples, this is your best bet. However, I don't believe I would want to have just one book on the subject. The other three books mentioned below add their own dimension to the subject and are (in my opinion) worth the few dollars needed to create a mini-library on the subject.

Electrostatic Experiments (G.W. Francis) -- The subtitle for this book is "An encyclopedia of early electrostatic experiments, demonstrations, devices, and apparatus." The book lives up to its name. A great book for an overview of the field. I know it sounds a little silly, but the nice bright white paper and crisp illustrations are a real boon to this book. The font is well chosen and the leading is easy to read. In this book you will find reference to odd-ball experiments that other books just don't get around to talking about. For example, Eggs illuminated. (p.200) and Illumination of oranges (p.201). If you are looking for demonstrations or ideas for creating new displays for lecture or theater, this book has plenty of inspiration.

Electrostatics (A.D. Moore) -- A nice home experiments how-to book. The book is a little chatty in parts. I liked this. The author speaks with a direct, sitting across the table, style.

Static Electricity (J.H. Pepper) -- This material is extracted fom Cyclopaedic Science Simplified 1889. I use this for historical reasons and to poke around in. The book since it was written in 1889 assumes a fair degree of background by the reader. Great pictures and some nice explanations of how things work. You just need to be able to penetrate the older text.

Packed with info, could use more on dangers, yes, dangers

The book has great info, but read a lot more then this before implementing. Dangers exist with Hi Pressure, DC voltages. Science can be fun but a fully charged 1 quart Lyden Jar, or a 2 liter plastic soda bottle Lyden Jar will knock you down. It can be lethal. Read, then read again, don't experiment alone and make sure everyone can do CPR(having number for EMTS is good too). When they tell you make your own lightening, remember the dangers of lightening. Other then that, there are process' that are downright dangerous just to make, (electrophorus). The finished product is safe enough(maybe), but the process of manufacture is tricky and dangerous.
Other then that 5 stars, great, you will develope respect for that "Humble" foot dragging on the rug static snap you give the dog on his nose. You will understand why they ground your car at toll booths, before you hand the person at the booth.
Finally this book IS NOT for children. High Schooler Seniors maybe. BUT WITH SUPERVISION, CLOSE SUPERVISION, a Lab setting is preferential, with fire extinguishers, First Aiders and people who can tell if you are about to reach X-Ray Potentials.

This was much thinner and less durable than I expected. It was not worth the money. I'm keeping it because I bought it for my Dad as a gag gift, but do not think it was worth the money. And, the side was bent and now has a permanent crease because of the packaging.
