Amazon.com Review
Food memoirs often delve into the meaning of life. This hardly surprises--memories are as essential to daily life as the food that sustains us. Miriam's Kitchen blends recipes and food reminiscences with family narratives and observations about the author's personal evolution as a Jew. Ehrlich weaves the stories from four generations of family life, punctuated with powerful and often tragic memories. While her mother-in-law, Miriam, is teaching her to make chicken livers with noodles, Ehrlich unexpectedly learns how Miriam, her mother, and husband survived a Nazi labor camp in Poland during the Holocaust. Using vivid and bare yet discreet words, she graphically tells what they suffered and the nightmares that still haunt them.

Ehrlich's own story covers her transformation from a child whose family lit Sabbath candles but went boating on Yom Kippur, to an adult who chooses an Orthodox life marked by ambivalence about the rigors of being kosher and pride in what she is passing on to her children. Recipes for Honey Cake, Noodle Pudding, and many others are buried treasures hidden among Ehrlich's intense words. Sadly omitted is a recipe for potato kugel. Her grandmother uses this tempting pudding to good-naturedly test, taunt, and ultimately as the means for accepting her daughter Selina's non-Jewish fianc into the family. Happily for us, 24 other tempting kosher recipes make up for this one missed dish. Miriam's Kitchen is a gripping and gratifying memoir of food, life, tragedy, and family survival. --Dana Jacobi

From Library Journal
Ehrlich, a former writer for BusinessWeek, writes with humor and passion about her journey from ambivalent Jew to a woman who observes tradition and teaches her children about their ethnic heritage. Her story begins when she meets Miriam, her future mother-in-law, a Polish Holocaust survivor who "guarded culinary specialties in her mind during years when possession and certainties were ripped from her hands." Through Miriam, Ehrlich awakens to dormant memories and traditions in her past and gradually decides that her own family life would have greater meaning if she made her kitchen kosher. The author opens a window on a culture and tradition that her readers may know nothing about, discussing religious and dietary laws and sharing over two dozen recipes for traditional foods. Orthodox readers will likely see themselves in descriptions of the humor and ambivalence involved in trying to incorporate the traditions in today's society. The writing is crisp and smooth. From Kirkus Reviews
An appealing, sensitive account of an assimilated Jewish woman's efforts to embrace the religious traditions of her ancestors. Former Business Week reporter Ehrlich (Nellie Bly, 1989) recounts a childhood where Judaism was merely kosher-style. Like so many other immigrants and children of immigrants, Ehrlich's left-wing parents shunned many of their religion's constraints. While pork didn't make it to their kitchen, shrimp did. And eating corned beef on ``Jewish'' rye became their most Jewish experience, ``the taste without the blessing.'' After Ehrlich married, she hungered for something more, finding that cultural nourishment from her mother-in-law, Miriam, who as a teenager had been sent to a Nazi work camp, but survived the horror with her spiritual pantry intact. From this living link to her grandmothers and their traditions, the author was able to learn the recipes to more than a culinary Judaism. The dietary laws led to Sabbath observance, which enriched her family with 24 hours of ``contemplation, rest, and praise as a gift . . . that punctuates the temporal world.'' Ehrlich's journey is not without occasional lapses and misgivings. She worries about the parochialism of her children's Jewish day school and prefers to tell professional contacts that she's a vegetarian, so that her dietary restrictions don't ``drive in a wedge.'' Nor is she completely comfortable with the Orthodox exclusion of women from the traditional prayer quorum, or minyan. ``I hope that a minyan will gather when I die,'' she writes, ``and that it will have women in it.'' While Ehrlich is not all that sure whether prayer matters or God plays a personal role in our lives, she is certain that the religious traditions she has adopted have made her life far more meaningful. Replete with family narratives and over two dozen recipes, Miriam's Kitchen is much more than one woman's journey to spiritual fulfillment. It is a savory stew made from the social and cultural ingredients of American-Jewish life. (Author tour) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Many Opportunities For Discussion
By IthacaNancy
This book was discussed in my book group. I only read about 15% of the book, though since I had a used copy, I was able to read the areas that had been highlighted and commented on by the previous reader (who seems quite thoughtful). The book is almost twenty years old now, and my book group wondered how anyone would manage to keep a kosher household when working full time and living in an isolated nuclear family (as most of us do). Recognizing the value of ritual and tradition, we also questioned the cost (not just financial) of rituals developed in different times. As a foodie and someone who cooks almost every meal from scratch, I can appreciate the work involved! In a community, I can see this could be possible, but the division of labor seems questionable in today's society.

I tried the egg salad: You should too
By Heather D-L
I read this book many years ago and enjoyed it then. I recently rediscovered it on my bookshelf and again, I am swept away by the deliciousness of the book.
For anyone that has ever tried to learn old world recipes and learn to maintain a kosher home/kitchen the book speaks volumes. I know many people say the book is repetitive, and it is. I suppose it doesn't bother me because I understand how many times a person and try and fail at maintaining a kosher kitchen and how many times a recipe can fail despite every good intention.
I am not a mushroom eater but I was particularly interested in the egg salad recipe in the book (It is not listed as the others are, just written about in the short chapter titled, "Egg Salad") I was interested enough to try it and I am glad I did. The cooked onion gives a real warm to the dish and I found that I could get away with very little salt. I used canned mushrooms that I had dried and reheated in the skillet with the onions. Very yum!

Miriam's Kitchen
By ked9
Everyone has a history, and everyone has a past. This past influences who we are and who we become. Traditions are passed down through generations in order to preserve the history of family. In Miriam's Kitchen by Elizabeth Ehrlich, the author compiles stories throughout her life in connection to recipes from her mother-in-law, a Holocaust survivor. The influence of her mother-in-law, Miriam, shapes Elizabeth's spiritual and religious journey. This memoir follows a women's awakening into religious and family values. The memoir is outlined throughout the span of a year, with each section encompassing a different month. These months make up her spiritual journey from longing to continuity. The religious journey outlined parallels Ehrlich's life as she grows into becoming a woman, a cook, and most importantly traditionally Jewish.
The author outlines the main idea that she is trying to convey perfectly in the last paragraph of the introduction. "I embrace them all. I consider the law, the restrictions, the presumptions of happiness, the doubt. I inventory layers of translucent recollection evoking food, love, home, apocrypha, anger, ritual, laughter, conflict and regret. The result is a collage, but also a way of life. That collage is my religion, and it is what I am passing on." (Ehrlich, 1998). This memoir is about wonder and interest, a search for a history, reclamation of tradition, and an integration of that tradition into the modern world.

From Publishers Weekly
Knight has gained notoriety as the medium (or "channel") claiming to be in contact with Ramtha, the spirit of a warrior who supposedly lived in ancient Atlantis. Her pedestrian, self-indulgent autobiography skims the occult, focusing instead on her formative experiencesa brutal uncle who raped her when she was four; a girlhood spent in poverty in New Mexico; her blossoming sexuality during adolescence; her three marriages, the third for love. Yet the paranormal keeps intruding. During a slumber party, she saw a UFO. Fighting a near-fatal illness through meditation, she sent an electrical shock through her body that, she claims, cured her. And then there is Ramtha who keeps materializing in her kitchen in flowing purple robes, mouthing wisdom in stilted diction ("God be that which is termed your birthright"). This soggy psychic saga is only for the already converted.

A State of Mind, My Story Ramtha: The Adventure Begins
By Penetralia
"A State of Mind, My Story" offers a biograpical look into JZ Knight, before, after, and during Ramtha channeling. This text may be, as a reviewer suggested, easier understood by those already on a spiritual path.

However, this book is recommended for RSE students, curious entities, and those whom wish to further understand the beginning adventures of our enlightened one.

Is Ramtha fact or fiction?
By Gil Sharkey
An interesting adventure of a woman's life which is to me sad in it's total.

I'll believe in Ramtha when he sends me some cash.

Ever heard of a fat caveman? Today's dieters should follow their ancestors' lead, proclaim the authors of this update to their bestselling original. For hundreds of thousands of years, the human diet consisted of unrefined foods that were high in fiber, low in sugar and low on the glycemic index. Eating similarly now-avoiding white flour, white potatoes, white rice, sugar, soft drinks and highly processed foods in general (the "basic principles" of a diet that's been "field-tested by the human digestive system throughout the eons")-will help people lose weight and keep it off, the authors argue. Their reasoning is sound (high blood sugar triggers the release of insulin, the "fat-storage hormone" and the "CEO of metabolism"; the less the body lives in fat storage mode, the better), and the lifestyle they propose is simple (though it goes beyond just chucking the 5-lb bag of Domino into the trash). Try eating six small meals a day, don't eat after 8 p.m.; read the labels of all breads and cereals to find the hidden sugars and stock your refrigerator with vegetables and lean meats, the authors say. In chapters that are straightforward and focused, the authors consider childhood obesity and diabetes, discuss artificial sweeteners and alcohol, offer recipes from restaurants around the country and answer FAQs from Sugar Busters everywhere. For those with the willpower to cut out the convenience foods, this will be a helpful guide to eating better.

Low Carb is the way to go
By Elizabeth
I'm on Sugar Busters because I'm prediabetic. After 6 weeks my A1C1 level is going down and my LDL cholesterol is back to a normal range. The first week was a bit tough for me because I'm a sugar addict, but now I'm past all that and it's pretty easy. If I just really have a bad craving I'll make sugar free chocolate pudding or have a piece of 70% dark chocolate. I'm eating much healthier now and enjoying it.

This book was recommended by my physician after my husband was diagnosed with pre-diabetes. He had to lose a lot of weight in a little time. This book was straight to the point and easy to follow. I don't know how much my husband lost but his clothes were significantly looser. I lost at least 15 pounds (which was all I could afford to lose as I was not really overweight) in only a few months following the teachings of this book.

Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age, by John Knight Lundwall PhD

A bold new approach to myth studies, Mythos and Cosmos reexamines ancient myth through the template of oral thinking and oral cosmology. Contradicting decades of assumptions about the purpose and function of ancient mythology, Lundwall defines myth as "the oral imprinting press of pre-literate peoples" and shows that myth belongs to a complex and rational method of information transmission amongst oral peoples. Further, ancient mythology belonged to a cultus which incorporated ritual and symbol in a cosmological system which sought to found the sacred world. Where this work really shines is in its discussion of how ancient oral peoples saw their universe. Oral cosmology is far more complex than the simple "flat-earth" models discussed in current textbooks. Such myth cycles as the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Labors of Heracles, and the story of the Great Flood are seen completely differently when viewed from within ancient cosmological thought. Many strange features of ancient culture, such as the dancing chorus in Greek theater, are explained in rational and revolutionary ways. The pyramids, ziggurats, and megalithic-henges are also seen in a new light. While academic, the book is written for a general audience. It is a fascinating exploration in ancient history, comparative myth and religious studies, and the ancient mind.

Review
Rather than attempt to explain everything from the beginning of time, the author’s aim is
thoughtfully defined: “This book is an attempt to create a historical context through which one
may consider ancient constructs embedded in myth, ritual, and culture.” And while the author
focuses on the Near East and Mediterranean, which are relatively rich with written records, he
gives much weight to the vast amount of human history that preceded, or co-existed with, the art
of writing. “My purpose is to show that what looks so strange to us about the ?past really derives
from specific circumstances in which ancient peoples lived and which we have forgotten: the
nature of orality and its epistemological consequences . . . and the nature of oral cosmology and
how such people viewed the world and their place in it.”
In “Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age,” author John Knight Lundwall,
(Ph.D., Comparative Myth and Religious Studies, Editor in Chief, Cosmos and Logos: Journal of
Myth, Religion, and Folklore.) successfully presents a broad spectrum of facts, analysis, and
creative concepts on a subject of great interest and relevance. The book covers the history of
myth and ancient scientific record, the intertwined richness of both written and oral human
accounts since antiquity, the history of human observations and ideas about cosmology and
celestial bodies, the impact of cosmology on ritual and cult practices, and a most detailed
discussion of three central myth cycles: the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Labors of Heracles, and
selected Old Testament stories.
In summary, “Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age” by John Knight
Lundwall, Ph.D. is truly a magnificent work of research and presentation that will be devoured
by those interested in myth, religion, philosophy and human history. The structure of the book is
logical and helpful, the facts and historical findings are presented in an accessible, interesting
manner, and conflicting approaches are described with fairness and considerate thoroughness.
While this book meets high academic standards of meticulousness and objectivity, it is highly
readable, easily understood, and offers novel ideas and fresh concepts that are thought provoking,
remarkably stimulating, and intellectually memorable. Highly recommended! —Columbia
Review

There are some philosophical and 'new age' books intended for the general-interest reader that are
suitable for skimming and easy reflection; and then there are writings such as MYTHOS And
COSMOS: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age which are directed to those interested in more of a
historical, analytical approach. Designed to challenge popular thinking rather than placate the
unexamined mind, MYTHOS And COSMOS makes an unusual case for the early intellectual
prowess of ancient man.
MYTHOS And COSMOS represents the work of a scholar with a life-long commitment to
examining ancient myth more closely. He completed his doctorate in comparative myth studies;
then applied it to his continuing education. Jungian psychology, he maintains, lends a more
accurate thought; that "...our conception of history is often the product of the ego" - and with this
in mind, he selects and tackles points in history that have remained incongruous over the centuries.
From what constitutes a 'literate person' and his observations, recordings and psyche to the
evolution of cosmological thinking, how narratives often cross the boundary from historical fact
into mythos, and how knowledge is fragmented and distorted over time, MYTHOS And COSMOS
surveys a range of evidence - written, oral, and artifacts alike - to reveal the assumptions
underlying broken, fragmented evidence.
In the process of piecing together possibilities, Dr. Lundwall does more than recreate history: he
considers the processes, influences, and politics involved in assigning direction and meaning to
ancient data.
Are ancient thinkers primitives? Does modern technology provide the illusion of intelligence
through comparative analytical processes? And are the foundations by which we compare and
assign judgments uncertain, in and of themselves? These questions and more are contained in a
scholarly yet accessible examination of historical, archaeological, and psychological evidence
ancient and modern, recommended for readers seeking history, science, psychology and
philosophy all wrapped up in a quest for what truly constitutes the realities of ancient cultures,
considering how modern investigators organize and analyze historical record as well as the
evolution of the processes and patterns leading to understanding. —D. Donovan, Midwestern
Book Review

Lundwall contends that far from being ignorant and backward savages, the preliterate cultures
that created mankind’s most ancient mythological tales had a high degree of intellectual
sophistication.
Lundwall finds fault with the general line of thinking regarding humanity’s oldest known stories,
mythologies, and the religious lore of the Egyptians, Babylonians, Mesopotamians, etc. Western
European scholarly arrogance—“often the product of the ego”—is at fault, he says, for the
Darwin-inspired mindset that our ancestors were either howling barbarians, ruled by childlike
superstition and uncouth brutality, or noble hippie-type simpletons living in Edenic harmony and
peace with each other and nature. Nor does he agree with so-called “Conspirators,” who believe
that ancient feats (e.g., the Egyptian pyramids) could only have resulted from contact with and
technical assistance from space aliens. In fact, though the ancients relied on oral more so than
written traditions, leaving enormous gaps in the annals of history, Lundwall argues that our
forebears were much like ourselves, with sublimely subtle levels of metaphysical thinking and
nuanced spoken/written languages—ones that have suffered in later translations. They also
created tremendous architectural wonders, intricate concepts encoded in ritual dance, and
sophisticated astronomical observations.
Admirably wary of self-described authorities who tend to oversimplify, Lundwall argues in prose
that sometimes crosses the boundary from academic to pop (he once cites a Jay Leno comedy
routine). In terms of actually dissecting a myth, it’s mainly the Epic of Gilgamesh (and some of
the works of Heracles) that gets a full narrative recounting. In his latter pages, he covers the
overlapping of the Old Testament and Genesis with pre-existing lore and historical truth. Several
of his salient points stand out, particularly his refreshingly broad perspective of what is, in
modern times, the fragmented pursuit of knowledge.
Recommended reading for classicists (and budding Indiana Joneses) graduating beyond Edith
Hamilton. —Kirkus Review

A book which helps us understand (and increase our sense of wonder about) myth and ritual
By B Daniel Blatt
From the savanna of Africa, the jungles of India, to the steppes of Eurasia, to the mountains of the South America, the plains of North America, even the islands of the Pacific, every human culture we have encountered is a story-telling culture. Through stories, through myths, our forebears have attempted to explain the universe and our relationship to our fellow man.

Even today, with the appeal of such books (& movies) as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, we see that stories with mythic elements and themes still call to us, still draw us in. Hollywood has retold stories from ancient Greece numerous times on the silver screen, with Lionsgate about to release a movie based on the gods of Egypt.

And yet we are reasonably certain that the stories that have come down to us, the narratives recorded on stone, papyrus and paper are only a fraction of the stories our ancestors told. For countless centuries, for millennia even, our forebears shared myths by telling them—and sometimes even dancing them. They didn’t read, they didn’t write. They talked, they listened. They moved.

No wonder that Dr. John Lundwall writes in his study, Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age that we know so little. In the course of this thoughtful book—and aware of the irony of his task—this scholar looks at the limited written record we do have in an attempt to understand these voices we can no longer hear.

He believes that “ancient categories of knowledge and ancient capacities of knowing are far more complex and familiar than has been assumed by ancient scholars.” These storytellers, their mythmakers were not ignorant rubes, but were curious, skeptical and intelligent men and women like us, merely using the resources available to them to make sense of the mysterious world around them.

Lundwall is well aware of the difficulty of his task. As he concedes that the “emergence of writing has had more impact on human culture and civilization than anything ever produced by the mind of the species,” he reminds us that Egyptian “hieroglyphs could be read in multiple ways—alphabetically, ideographically, figuratively and symbolically.”

He goes on to consider how literacy changed our ways of knowing, wondering if “an increase in the output of old texts contributed to the formulation of new theories.”

From the texts he has, he realizes how our forebears very often crafted their symbols and developed their rites by looking to the stars. So omnipresent are cosmological themes in cultures across the globe that he has become “certain that celestial phenomena [are] the primary reservoir of oral cognition.”

Indeed, in his studies of temple architecture, he finds relationships between the layout of these sacred shrines and the movements of the sun, moon, stars and planets.

Finally, he provides a good dose of myth too, interspersing his narrative with descriptions of ritual and details from surviving stories. In the last third of the book, he studies one of the oldest such tales, that of the legendary (and perhaps also historical) Mesopotamian king Gilgamesh as well as the labors of the most popular (as best we can gather) Greek hero, Heracles and even some stories from the Hebrew Scriptures.

Through it all—and with a healthy dose of skepticism—he helps us understand what we can never really know, how and why our ancestors came to tell the stories they did, enact the rituals they performed and design the structures that they built. It is the questions he asks that keeps us turning the pages (and even writing in them as we offer some of our own observations).

This book gives us tools to help us better appreciate the ancient myths that do survive.

And that is what makes this a good book—and well worth your while. As we delight in the stories that our forebears told to explain the world, stories that we still read and retell today, he helps increase our sense of wonder.

Myth, Purpose, and the Spoken Word
By Big Dave
Mythos and Cosmos stands in a line of brilliant and essential books that pierce through the fog of modernity to ask the question: what were our ancestors thinking?

In particular, Lundwall examines the connections among mythology, liturgy, and astronomy in the context of oral culture. He explicates myth as a vehicle for narrating the stars as initiatory maps that gave human life meaning and oriented us towards the larger universe, connecting the microcosm and the macrocosm in the primordial unity captured in the words "as above, so below." On the way, he sheds new light on such perennial favorites as Herakles and Gilgamesh.

If you enjoy the insights of such thinkers as Joseph Campbell, Giorgio de Santillana, Frances Yates, Mircea Eliade, C.G. Jung, and Jane Ellen Harrison, or if you are simply interested in a different perspective on what was really going on with ancient mythology before Rick Riordan and the D'Aulaires got their hands on it, this book is for you.

Broad, Creative, and Smart
By Dionysus
A broad revisioning of ancient oral cultures and how they create and use mythologies. A fascinating exploration of ancient history, myth, religion, and cosmology. The ties behind many myth systems and the oral cosmos are explained, and such myth cycles as Gilgamesh, Heracles, and Abraham are explored.

Lundwall's introduction is a must read, as he conceptualizes the whole work. Afterwards, the book is divided into 8 chapters.

Chapter 1 discusses the nature of mind and consciousness in history. He also discusses how history is constructed. Lundwall poses that human beings have the same intelligence in the ancient past as they do today, and the thought of intellectual evolution is "silly and sloppy." Lundwall backs up his discussion with very interesting examples and insights.

Chapter 2 discusses the main difference between modern and ancient peoples: orality and literacy. People in the ancient past did not read or write (most of them anyway). Oral people organize and conceptualize information differently than literate people, with "keen limitations and curious potentials." This chapter is very illuminating and begins to explain much which seems strange in ancient history.

Chapter 3 discusses oral cosmology, or how oral people's see the universe. Wow. No flat-earth mumbo-jumbo here. This is a very smart discussion on an experiential universe where such things as the "flat earth" are really the observable integration of the horizon with the sky and its examined solar, lunar, and stellar cycles. Lundwall's discussion of the development of the heliocentric system and Copernicus is absolutely fascinating, and the idea of a solar archetype behind the ancient system of thinking turns the strange into the remarkable.

Chapter 4 discusses oral religion and the integration of oral cosmology and the oral religious cult at the center of civilization. Lundwall shows that the purpose of ancient astronomy was a deeply religious cosmovision which related the soul and the heavens. This vision reveals itself in various religious modes of worship and ritual practices. His discussion of the ancient Greco-Roman mystery religions and their stellar theology was fascinating.

Chapter 5 summarizes in a few pages chapters 1 thru 4.

Chapter 6 is a wonderful exploration of the Gilgamesh myth which points out certain stellar motifs embedded within the ancient narrative. A discussion of the Flood myth is included, and this was a complete left turn from all other materials I have read. And it made sense. A rich and textured argument that cross compares other religious and myth systems.

Chapter 7 explores the Labors of Heracles and shows a structured astral theology behind it. Again, I will never look at the lion robe in the same way. I have never read anything like this either, but Lundwall shows parallels with the Gilgamesh cycle and Egyptian religion which I never got in my mythology 101 class in undergrad.

Chapter 8 tackles the Old Testament stories of Abraham and Jacob, with the story of Balaam thrown in. Again, very fascinating. A discussion pure believers of the Bible may find objectionable, but actually makes these stories more sensible, and even more interesting than just a religious history.

And finally, some interesting quotes as examples of the kind or writing and style of the book:

The history of the mind is not a linear history. Each epoch has its “Age of Reason” and its “Fall.” The apex of human reason is not modernity, but an uneven course of analogous magnifications of the mind between super-human spirits throughout history, few as they are. The human mind resides in a fractal universe where genius and ignorance coexist, and where authentic curiosity and moral courage are always something new. p.49

Without a written record like a dictionary or encyclopedia, how does an oral mind catalog and separate all the different principles and dynamics of nature? Quite simply, the oral mind ascribes certain manifestations of nature, by analogy, to male and female rationales. . . . It is impossible, however, to ascribe all male and female manifestations in nature onto one image or being using only oral memory. Every different manifestation in nature must also have a divine will behind it. A different divine spirit is imprinted onto a pantheon of deities who not only organize the oral cosmos but also serve mnemonic needs. Polytheism and orality are wed. p. 57

Might I suggest that with the superhuman spirit that invented writing, the first myth-makers were of an order of mind equal to any human our historians prize—Einstein, Newton, Kepler, Plato. They were a group of people at the very edge of history—people that we know nothing about and to whom we owe everything. p. 108

An oral mind trained in the learning of his ancestors could gaze at the heavenly orbs while reciting myths through song and dance and recall the collective wisdom of the tribe. It is highly probable that the celestial journey was the “temple walk” of oral minds embedding their most profound truths and insights in mnemonic shrines within the stars. p. 163

The eminent Egyptologist Gaston Maspero held the view that the Great Pyramid itself was not solely a tomb, but a mystery temple where the chapters of the Egyptian Book of the Dead were ritually reenacted by initiates in the different chambers and hallways. p. 197

The AnunnakkÅ«, the Argonauts, the heads of Cerberus, the sailors of Cessair, and the sons of the prophets—all are the sacred fifty who aid or witness our hero’s journey through the celestial axis or stand guard in the underworld overseeing the celestial axis. Whence do they come? Why are so many companions required to accompany all our heroes between the worlds? What is the significance of the number fifty? p. 229

As already stated, because the Flood story seems so out of place in the text, current scholarship believes that it is a late appendage added to the Gilgamesh cycle rather than an essential element in the story. The first indication that the Flood story might actually belong to the question Gilgamesh asks Utnapishtim, “How did you find eternal life?” comes from a remarkable parallel found in The Egyptian Book of the Dead. p. 279

Like many of our mystery saviors, Dionysus emerges from the sea. Remarkably, in one way or another, so does Gilgamesh, Sargon, Osiris, Noah, Moses, Cyrus, Tammuz, Karna, Oedipus, Adonis, Heracles, Jason, Perseus, Romulus, Siegfried, and Lohengrin, or the Knight of the Swan. All these heroes must board some form of ark and find a new life in a new land. The original primer for this mythic motif is the ritual journey through the celestial axis of the ancient cosmos where the secrets of the true heaven and the true earth were kept. p. 288-9

Details within the myth show the Greeks did not create the story of Heracles—they inherited it. Heracles’ mortal mother’s name is Mycenaean. King Eurystheus is also Mycenaean, and the kingdom to which he belongs is a Mycenaean city. The localized traditions of our hero in Tiryns descend from Mycenaean times, and the first five labors Heracles performs all take place in the northeastern Peloponnese. The seventh labor, capturing the Cretan Bull, originates in either Mycenaean or even Minoan times (Nilsson 217). In other words, the entire cycle attributed to Heracles is not Greek. p. 301

The Labors of Heracles are narrative allegories to ritual initiations through the heavenly underworld. This conclusion is no idle speculation, and the first labor turns out to be the master key that unties the entire Gordian Knot of this myth complex. p. 308

Much of the genius in the Old Testament lies within its elegantly constructed literary puns, parallelisms, and conundrums. What should be obvious, but often goes unnoticed, is the fact that a literary construction, no matter how elegant and profound, is a literate one. All the expert wordplay found throughout the story of Jacob in the Genesis text reveals that official history has been recorded within the container of literary technique. This is all well and good, as long as one remembers that the story of Jacob hails from oral traditions. Oral traditions in the ancient world were not constructed by literary technique; they were patterned after cosmological insights and recorded by cosmogonic myths and rituals. p. 336

These are sufficient to show what is going on in this book. It is dense, but creative. It is academic, but understandable and free of jargon. It is a broad exploration into the ancient past and the human soul and mind. A must read.

Back to Basics!
By Elisabeth Guist
This book is very easy to read and it's contents are excellent food for thought. The ideal gift for a young person or someone graduating high school or college. The main part of the book is a section of Biblical promises for every situation imaginable and it is punctuated with notes by Michael W Smith, who is gifted when it comes to writing for young people. His advice and recounting of experiences he's faced are simple but profound, and very down to earth.
I was also very impressed with the presentation page at the front and autographs section at the back of the book. Definitely one to put on the shopping list!

Nikos Parakis twisted his wrist slightly to glance at his watch and frowned. If he wanted to make his appointment in the City he was going to have to skip lunch. No way could he fit in a midday meal now, having delayed leaving his Holland Park apartment—his base in the UK—in order to catch a lengthy teleconference with Russian clients. He'd also, on this early summer's day, wanted to get some fresh air and brief exercise, so had dismissed his driver and intended to pick up a taxi on the far side of the park, in Kensington High Street.

As he gained the wide tree-lined pavement he felt a stab of hunger. He definitely needed refuelling.

On impulse, he plunged across the road and headed for what appeared to be some kind of takeaway food shop. He was no food snob, despite the wealth of the Parakis banking dynasty at his disposal, and a sandwich was a sandwich—wherever it came from.

The moment he stepped inside, however, he almost changed his mind. Fast food outlets specialising in pre-packed sandwiches had come a long way in thirty years, but this was one of the old-fashioned ones where sandwiches were handmade on the spot, to order, constructed out of the array of ingredients contained in plastic tubs behind the counter.

Damn, he thought, irritated, he really didn't have time for this.

But he was here now, and it would have to do.

'Have you anything ready-made?' he asked, addressing the person behind the counter. He didn't mean to sound brusque, but he was hungry and in a hurry.

The server, who had her back to him, went on buttering a slice of bread. Nikos felt irritation kick again.

'She's making mine first, mate,' said a voice nearby, and he saw that there was a shabbily dressed, grizzled-looking old man seated on a chair by the chilled drinks cabinet. 'You'll 'ave ter wait.'

Nikos's mouth pressed tight, and he moved his annoyed regard back to the figure behind the counter. Without turning, the server spoke.

'Be with you in a sec,' she said, apparently to Nikos, and started to pile ham onto the buttered slice before wrapping the sandwich in a paper serviette and turning to hand it to the man. She pushed a cup of milky tea towards him, too.

'Ta, luv,' the man said, moving to stand closer to Nikos than he felt entirely comfortable with.

Whenever the man had last bathed, it hadn't been recently. Nor had he shaved. Moreover, there was a discernible smell of stale alcohol about him.

The man closed grimy fingers around the wrapped sandwich, picked up the mug in a shaky grip and looked at Nikos.

'Any spare change, guv?' he asked hopefully. 'No,' said Nikos, and turned back to the server, who was now wiping the sandwich preparation surface clean. The old man shuffled out.

The server's voice followed him. 'Stay off the booze, Joe—it's killing you.'

'Any day now, luv, any day…' the man assured her.

He shuffled out and was gone, lunch provided. Presumably for free, Nikos supposed, having seen no money change hands for the transaction. But his interest in the matter was zero, and with the server finally free to pay him attention, he repeated his original question about the availability of ready-made sandwiches—this time most definitely impatiently.

'No,' replied the server, turning around and busying herself with the tea urn.

Her tone of voice had changed. If Nikos could have been bothered to care—which he didn't, in the slightest—he might have said she sounded annoyed.

'Then whatever's quickest.'

He glanced at his watch again, and frowned. This was ridiculous—he was wasting time instead of saving it!

'What would you like?'

The server's pointless question made his frown deepen.

'I said whatever's quickest,' he repeated.

'That,' came the reply, 'would be bread and butter.'

Nikos dropped his wrist and levelled his gaze right at her. There was no mistaking the antagonism in her tone. Or the open irritation in his as he answered.

'Ham,' he bit out.

'On white or brown? Baguette or sliced?' 'Whatever's quickest.' How many times did he have to say that?

'That would be white sliced.' 'White sliced, then.' 'Just ham?'

'Yes.' Anything more complicated and he'd be there all day.

She turned away and busied herself at the preparation surface behind her. Nikos drummed his fingers on the counter. Realising he was thirsty, he twisted round to help himself to a bottle of mineral water from the chilled drinks cabinet against the wall.

As he put it on the counter the server turned round, sandwich prepared and wrapped in a paper serviette. She glanced at the bottle and Nikos could see she was mentally calculating the combined price.

'Three pounds forty-five,' she said.

He had his wallet out already, taking out a note.

'That's a fifty, she said, as if she'd never seen one before.

Perhaps she never had, thought Nikos acidly. He said nothing, just went on holding it out for her.

'Haven't you anything smaller?' she demanded.

'No.'

With a rasp of irritation she snatched it from him and opened the till. There was some audible clinking and rustling, and a moment later she was clunking his change down on the countertop. It consisted of silver to make it up to a fiver, a single twenty-pound note and twenty-five individual pound coins.

Then she raised her gaze to Nikos and glared at him.

And for the first time Nikos looked at her.

Looked at her—and saw her.

He stilled completely. Somewhere inside his head a voice was telling him to stop staring, to pick up the ludicrous heap of coins and pocket the note and get the hell out of there. Get a taxi, get to his meeting, get on with the rest of his life and forget he'd ever been hungry enough to step into some two-bit sandwich bar patronised by alcoholic down-and-outs.

But the voice went totally and entirely unheeded.

Right now only one part of his brain was functioning. The part that was firing in instant, total intensity with the most visceral masculine response he had ever experienced in his life.

Thee mou, but she was absolutely beautiful.

There was no other word for her. In an instant Nikos took in a face that was sculpted to perfection: high cheekbones, contoured jawline, straight nose not a millimetre too long or too short, wide-set eyes of startling blue, and a mouth. Ah, a mouth whose natural lushness was as inviting as a honey-drenched dessert…

How the hell didn't I notice her straight away?

But the question searing through him was irrelevant. Everything right now was irrelevant except his desire—his need—to keep drinking her in. Taking in the incredible impact her stunning looks were having on him. His eyes narrowed in their instinctive, potent perusal of her features, and he felt his response course through him.

He was not a man who had been deprived of the company of beautiful women in his thirty-odd years. As the heir to the Parakis banking dynasty he'd become accustomed to having the hottest girls making a bee-line for him. And he knew that it wasn't just the Parakis millions that drew them in. Nature, for whatever capricious reason, had bestowed upon him a six-foot frame—which he kept in peak condition with rigorous and ruthless physical exercise—and looks that, without vanity, he knew women liked. Liked a lot.

The combination had proved highly successful, and his private life was plentifully supplied by any number of keen and eager females only too happy to be seen on his arm, or to keep him company in bed. Given that, therefore, it would have been perverse of him not to have chosen those females who were of the very highest calibre when it came to their appearance.

And this woman, who had drawn his attention so riv-etingly, was most definitely of that elite calibre.

His gaze worked over her, and as it did so another realisation struck him. She wasn't wearing a trace of make-up and her hair—blonde, from what little he could see of it—was concealed under some kind of baseball cap. As for her figure—although she appeared to be tall—she was clad in a baggy T-shirt that bore the legend 'Sarrie's Sarnies' and did less than nothing for her.

Hell, if she looked this good stuck in this dump, dressed in grunge, what would she look like dressed in designer labels?

For a moment—just a moment—he felt an overriding desire to put that to the test.

Then, in the next second, he crashed and burned.

'If you want a piece of meat, try a butcher's shop!'

The server's harsh voice cut right through Nikos's riveted attention to her physical attributes.

A frown of incomprehension—and annoyance—pulled his brows together.

'What?' he demanded.

Her face was set. Absently Nikos noted how looking angry actually made her even more stunning. Her cerulean eyes flashed like sapphires.

'Don't give me that,' she snapped. 'Now, take your change, and your damn sandwich, and go!'

It was Nikos's turn to experience anger. His face hardened. 'Your rudeness to a customer,' he said freezingly, 'is totally unacceptable. Were you one of my employees you would be dismissed instantly for taking such an attitude to those whose custom pays your wages.'

For answer, she put the palms of her hands on the counter—Nikos found himself noting how well shaped they were—and braced herself.

'And if I worked for you—which, thank God, I don't—I would be suing you for sexual harassment!' she bit back. Her eyes narrowed to slits. 'That's what I meant by wanting "meat", sunshine!'

Nikos's expression changed. The hardness was still in his eyes, but there was something else, too. A glint that, had the stunning but inexplicably bolshie female facing him been one of his acquaintances, she would have known sent a crystal-clear message.

'Since when is it illegal to admire a woman's beauty?' he riposted silkily.

To prove his point he let his gaze wash over her again. Inside him, the visceral reaction she'd aroused so powerfully warred with the irritation he'd felt ever since his hunger had hit him—an irritation that her hostility and rudeness had elevated to outright anger. He wasn't sure which emotion was predominant. What he was sure of, though, was that right now his overpowering desire was to rattle her cage.

'If you want to go round ogling women like meat, then you should damn well wear sunglasses and spare us the ordeal,' she shot back.

Nikos felt yet another emotion spark through him. Almost unconsciously, he found himself starting to enjoy himself.

One arched eyebrow quirked tauntingly. 'Ordeal?' he asked limpidly.

And then, quite deliberately, he let his gaze soften. No longer assessing. More…caressing. Letting her see clearly that women who received his approbation most definitely did not regard it as an ordeal.

And before his eyes, to his intense satisfaction, he saw a wave of colour suffuse her clear, translucent skin. Her cheeks grew stained and her gaze dropped.

'Go away,' she said. Her voice was tight. 'Just…go away!'

He gave a low laugh. Game, set and match—thank you very much. He didn't need any further confirmation to know that he'd just effortlessly breached her defences…got right past that bolshie anger barrier and hit home, sweet home.

With a sweeping gesture he scooped the pile of coins into his pocket, together with the solitary twenty-pound note, then picked up his ham sandwich and the bottle of water.

'Have a nice day,' he said flippantly, and strolled out of the sandwich shop.

His irritation was gone completely.

As he emerged he saw the down-and-out, Joe, leaning against a nearby lamppost, wolfing down the sandwich he had been given. On impulse, Nikos reached into his jacket pocket, jingling with all the pound coins she'd landed him with.

He scooped up a handful and proffered them. 'You asked about spare change,' he said to the man, who was eyeing him.

'Ta, guv,' said the man, and took the handful eagerly, his bloodshot eyes gleaming.

His grimy hands were shaking, and Nikos felt a pang of pity go through him.

'She's right, you know,' he heard himself telling the man. 'The booze is killing you.'

The bloodshot eyes met his. They were not gleaming now. There was desolation in them.

'I know, mate.'

He pulled his gaze away and then he was off again, shuffling down the street, pocketing the money, shoulders hunched in defeat. For a moment Nikos's eyes stayed on him. Then he saw a taxi cab approaching along the High Street, with its 'For Hire' sign illuminated. He flagged it down and flung himself into the back seat, starting to wolf down his ham sandwich.

His own words to the down-and-out echoed in his head. 'She's right, you know…'

His jaw tightened. Damn—she was, too. And not just about that wretched alcoholic.

Finishing his sandwich, he lifted his mobile phone from his inside pocket and pressed the speed-dial key for his London PA. She answered immediately, and Nikos gave her his instructions.

'Janine, I need to have some flowers delivered.'

Mel stood, palms still pressed into the surface of the counter, and glared after the tall retreating figure. She was mad—totally hopping mad. She hadn't been this angry since she couldn't remember when.

Damn the arrogance of the man!

She could feel her jaw still clenching. She hadn't liked him the moment he'd walked into the shop. The way he'd spoken—not even waiting for her to turn around to him, just making his demands as if she was some kind of servant. Underling. Minion. Lackey. The insulting words marched through her head.

She'd tried for her customary politeness while she was finishing Joe's sandwich, but then she'd caught the way the damn man had looked at Joe—as if he was a bad smell. Well, yes, he was—but that wasn't the point. The point was that Joe was in a bad way, and for heaven's sake anyone would have felt pity for the guy, surely? Especially—and now her jaw clenched even more—especially a man whom life had so obviously not treated anything like as grimly as it had poor old Joe.

That had put her back up straight away. And from then on it had just got worse.

The whole monosyllabic exchange about what kind of sandwich he'd wanted replayed itself in her head, followed by—oh yes—his dropping a fifty-pound note down in payment. Mel's mouth tightened in satisfaction. Well, it had given her particular pleasure to dump all those pound coins on him by way of change.

Boy, it had riled him—she had seen that immediately. Trouble was…and now her expression changed yet again, to a mix of anger and something else quite entirely…he had had that comeback on her.

Right through her body she could feel the heat flush. It was running right through her—through every vein, right out to the tips of her fingers—as though someone has tipped hot water into her. And to her own mortification she even felt glorious heat pooling in her core, felt her breasts start to tingle with traitorous reaction.

Oh, damn! Damn, damn, damn!

Yet she couldn't stop herself. Couldn't stop the memory—instant, vivid and overpowering—of the way he'd looked at her. Looked right at her. Looked her over.

Meat, she said desperately to herself. As if you were a piece of meat—that's how he looked at you. Just as you told him.

She fought to call back the burst of satisfaction she'd felt when she'd rapped that out at him, but it was impossible. All that was possible now was to go on feeling the wonderful flush of heat coursing through her. She fought it down as best she could, willing it to leave her—to leave her alone—just as she'd told him to go, just go away.
