Several other histories of Hollywood's studio system have already been published, including Robert Stanley's The Celluloid Empire (LJ 5/15/78), Douglas Gomery's The Hollywood Studio System (LJ 1/86), and Ethan Mordden's The Hollywood Studios (LJ 5/15/88). All these books have some value, but Mordden and Schatz win top honors. Larger libraries should purchase both books, as they complement each other. Mordden's primary interest is aesthetics; Schatz's is business. Mordden's writing is sometimes brilliant, while Schatz's is only good, but Schatz has obviously done a lot of research, and he puts it to good use in a very readable book. Take a journey back in time to Hollywood of long ago!

If you are interested in the history of Hollywood during the studio era, this is the book for you! It is what my history professors in college would have called the "definitive" work on the subject. That usually meant long. It certainly does not fall short in that department. Starting with the silent movie era and progressing to the advent of television, you will be familiarized with the technology, economics, and politics of the industry. If you are looking for a work filled with titillating Hollywood gossip, you are going to be disappointed. It is not that kind of book. I was a little perplexed by the weight given to various movies and personalities. For example, very little was said about the filming of Gone With The Wind. Yet, a great deal of space was devoted to the movies and careers of Abbott and Costello. Interesting. It is not a fast read and at times can be a bit dry, but well worth your time if you want to learn more about this colorful bygone age.

A must for anyone interested in the Golden Era of movie making

I was looking for a book that would take me through the development of the Hollywood movie industry from the early days through the golden era. I found it in this book. It is basically laid out in a sequential fashion, but jumps from studio to studio and even from movie to movie. Personalities are detailed as well as conflicts between individuals and studios. The behind the scenes stories off the rise and fall of various studio heads and others were fascinating.
For anyone interested in an in depth review of the golden era, this book is excellent. I learned so much I had no idea about. Highly recommended.

Good information but reads like a textbook and is kind of hard to follow. It's taken me a couple weeks to read this one when normally it would take me a couple days.

I'll save you the $3 and time to read this hodge podge of a "book"

Buy a domain name. Sell ads or use google Adsense, pick a topic, blog about it. The end. This is not a book, it's a collection of the writer's prior articles (he says so up front). So, many paragraphs are repeated (some more than a few times!). There is no consistency or flow. And he seems hellbent on convincing you to become a web developer--because that is how he made his money. Oh, and maybe blog a bit, whatever, but the real money is in web development. Did i mention to sell your web development skills for $500 a pop? Oh, and dont forget, you can make money doing web development. And on and on he goes. Don't make the same mistake I did, thinking its only a few bucks. Save your money, and your time reading this dribble.

Oh! And he repeatedly tries to get you to click on links that no doubt make him $ for each click!

The BEST book I've read for blogging!

This book was fantastic. And when I say this, let me explain why saying this is different for me. I have read a LOT of books on making blogs and other online businesses. This one blows every one out of the water.
One of the things I enjoyed immediately was the way the author described the benefits of a blog. In most books that talk about starting a blog, the first benefit they describe is the income that can be created through blogging. In this book, the author describes a different benefit first; and that is the ability to record and organize your thoughts, and analyze topics in a way you normally would not. As a writer, I was immediately impressed because many times I am driven to write because of these exact reasons rather than the idea of "I could sell this.".
The entrepreneurial applications in this book are endless because the author teaches you to not only build a blog but also introduces you to the business of online business.
The best part about this book is the way it is written. First, it is written in language every one will understand. It is honest and the author is incredibly down to earth. While you are learning the many ways to become an entrepreneur, you don't ever feel like you are being talked down to or that the information has been over simplified. This concept is obvious even when talking about rather complex things like domain registration and purchasing, monetizing, SEO, marketing, Google ranking, Google Analytics, and Google Adsense. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to start a blog...well, let me be honest..I'll likely recommend it to everyone!

Great Infor In This Book

I've been building blogs and making money online for several years now. The information in this book will walk you through the process of getting started and understanding the basics of how to succeed online. I didn't see anything at all that I did not agree with. The author knows what he is talking about and has provide an excellent resource for the money...

I would have given this book a five star rating except:

1) There are some formatting issues...some areas of the book have bold text throughout. Even though the information is good, the bold text is very annoying. It's possible that it's an Amazon issue...

2) The authors promise to make six figures... that's just a bunch of Internet marketing mumbo jumbo. The potential to make limitless money on the Internet is for everyone, but there's nothing in this book that will lead anyone into the place of making 6 figures.

In any case, this is an excellent read if you want to get started on the Internet.

A well written story!

'Okay,a well written story you say. So why not 5 stars'? I wanted so much to give it 5 stars.You may read it and may well give it 5 stars as well you should! The story deserves it. Let me explain;
I read this story in one-sitting. I could not put it down 'cepting between sips of coffee.This story has all the academics and tools of great writing that cannot but help make a story interesting. A strong storyline and a selection of the proper characters to carry that storyline from beginning to end. The story itself has delightful twists and turns that add not detract from the readers experience. The characters make a complete journey in their growth from (a) to (z) gradually for the duration of the story and arrive at that rare (very rare) place for this genre; a loving (very loving) FLR-female dominant one-on-one relationship. 'So what is the problem' you ask? Good question. It is my own subjective opinion and yes maybe my desires. I thought the female-protagonist fell slightly short from what I came to expect from her in lieu of my reading experience of her throughout the story. Again; this is totally subjective. Otherwise I enjoyed it immensely.

Climate change is one of today’s most pressing global issues and will become increasingly important in the decades to come, as societies will feel its pervasive impacts in many aspects of their lives. Given that the majority of these climate change impacts will be felt through the medium of water, the book explores the interrelationships and inter-linkages between water, climate change and sustainable development.

About the Author
Prof. Asit K. Biswas is the founder of the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico, and currently is the Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy in Singapore, University of Wuhan, China, and Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar, India. Formerly a Professor in UK, Canada and Sweden, he was a member of the World Commission on Water. He has been a senior advisor to 19 governments, six Heads of the United Agencies, Secretary General of OECD and also to many other major international and national organisations. He is a Past President of the International Water Resources Association, and has held important positions in several major international water and environment‐related professional associations. Prof. Biswas is the founder of the International Journal of Water Resources Development and has been its Editor‐in‐Chief for the past 28 years. He has been the author or editor of 81 books (6 more are now under publication) and published over 680 scientific and technical papers. His work has now been translated into 37 languages. Among his numerous prizes are the two highest awards of the International Water Resources Association (Crystal Drop and Millennium Awards), Walter Huber Award of the American Society of Civil Engineering and Honorary Degree of Doctor of Technology from University of Lund, Sweden, and Honorary Degrees of Doctor of Science from University of Strathclyde, Helsinki University of Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology. Prof. Biswas received the Stockholm Water Prize in 2006 for “his outstanding and multi‐faceted contributions to global water resource issues”, as well as the Man of the Year Award from Prime Minister Harper of Canada, and the Aragon Environment Prize of Spain. In 2012, he was named a “Water Hero of the World” by the Impeller Magazine, and also as one of the 10 thought‐leaders of the world in water by Reuters. He is a member of the Global Agenda Council on Water Security of the World Economic Forum. He is regular contributor to many national and international newspapers on resource and development related issues and also is a television commentator in three continents.
Dr. Cecilia Tortajada is President of the International Water Resources Association; Scientific Director of the International Centre on Water and Environment, Zaragoza, Spain; former Visiting Professor of the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy, Singapore; and Vice President of the Third World Centre for Water Management. She has been an advisor to major international institutions like FAO, UNDP, CDG, InWEnt, and the governments of Cameroon, India, Turkey, and Republic of Congo on various aspects of water resources and environmental management and governance-related issues. She is currently working on formulation of national and international policies for water governance; management of future global environmental and water-related issues; development of innovative approaches for poverty alleviation through regional development; and capacity building in the water sector. She is the Editor of the International Journal of Water Resources�Development, and member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Natural Resources Policy Research.

About the Author
Chitra Agrawal is the author of Vibrant India: Fresh Vegetarian Recipes from Bangalore to Brooklyn and the founder of Brooklyn Delhi, an award-winning Indian condiments line. Since 2009, she has been serving, writing about, and teaching her family's vegetarian recipes from India with a slant on seasonality and local ingredients. Chitra writes the popular recipe blog The ABCDs of Cooking, teaches vegetarian Indian cooking classes at Brooklyn Kitchen, Brooklyn Brainery, and Whole Foods, and hosts pop-up dinners throughout New York City with creative Indian-inspired menus. KALE YOGURT RAITA
All seasons • Serves 6 to 8 

This recipe is based on a spinach raita that was prepared by my friend Asha’s mom. It’s also loosely inspired by Greek tzatziki, which is usually made with cucumbers, chopped garlic, and lemon. It’s creamy and indulgent, and you can use it as a dip or eat it plain or with a meal. 

I often make this raita with sautéed kale, using any and all varieties—curly, red, and lacinato—and have also substituted different greens such as spinach, tatsoi, or mizuna in this recipe. 

You can eat the raita as a dip, or serve it as a side with rice and one of the hulis on pages 131 to 137. 

1 tablespoon mild-flavored oil such as canola 
1⁄4 teaspoon black mustard seeds 
1⁄4 teaspoon cumin seeds 
3 fresh curry leaves 
1 Indian green chile or serrano chile, chopped 
1 clove garlic, minced 
2 cups stemmed, chopped kale leaves 
1⁄4 to 1⁄2 teaspoon salt 
Squeeze of lemon juice 
2 cups plain yogurt, lightly beaten by hand 
2 tablespoons sour cream or Greek yogurt 
Freshly ground black pepper 
Red chile powder or paprika, for garnish 

Put the oil in a small frying pan or sauté pan over medium heat. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add one black mustard seed. When the seed sizzles and pops, add the rest of the mustard seeds. Keep a lid handy to cover the pan while the mustard seeds are popping. When the popping starts to subside (a few seconds), add the cumin seeds. When the cumin seeds turn a darker shade of golden brown, turn the heat to medium-low. Rub the curry leaves between your fingers a little to release their natural oils, and drop them and the green chile into the oil. Cover immediately, as moisture from the curry leaves will cause the oil to spatter. Then stir to evenly coat everything with oil and continue to fry until the chile is less raw, 10 to 15 seconds. Stir in the garlic and sauté until fragrant, 10 to 15 seconds. 

Add the kale to the pan, followed by 1⁄4 teaspoon of the salt. Sauté until the kale is bright green in color and just wilted, 1 to 2 minutes. Add one good squeeze of lemon juice. Transfer the kale to a medium bowl and let cool. (I sometimes put it in the freezer for a few minutes if I’m in a rush.) 

When the kale is cool, mix it with the yogurt, sour cream, and remaining 1⁄4 teaspoon salt, or to taste. Garnish with a few grinds of pepper and a sprinkling of red chile powder on top before serving.

This cookbook is beautiful! I was so excited to purchase it when it came out the other week. My husband and I eat a primarily vegetarian diet at home, and this cookbook is filled with new and interesting veggie recipes. I have always enjoyed eating Indian food out, but as the author clarifies in the introduction, most of the Indian restaurants in the US feature the cuisine of Northern India. While I love all those rich curries and dishes, the Southern Indian recipes in this cookbook feature meals that are lighter, healthier, and full of fresh ingredients. So far, we have tried the roasted brussels sprouts and cauliflower dish, and a few of the soup recipes, and all have been delicious. Normally, I'm not a total cookbook guru--I typically make up my own recipes, look up stuff online, or reference the Joy of Cooking, but I love looking through this cookbook to get new ideas. I also appreciate how the author shared her personal family history and cultural context of this type of food--it gave me a deeper understanding of the ingredients and cuisine. I am also a sucker for how things look aesthetically, and I love that way this book is set-up, including the beautiful illustrations and photos that intersperse the recipes. I did have to pay a visit to an Indian market to stock up on some of the spices and other ingredients needed for many of the recipes, but now that I have them on-hand, I mostly just have to get the fresh vegetables when I want to cook something from this book. I would definitely recommend this cookbook to anyone who is interested in healthy, interesting recipes, or just needs some new flavors to get out of a food rut!

This is a unique and thoughtful compilation of South Indian vegetarian home cooking -- the kind I grew up with but never quite learned to cook. While my dear mom has passed away and taking her amazing cooking talent with her, Chitra Agrawal has lovingly captured the recipes that evoke that authentic "home" taste, but often with a fusion twist that make them even more exquisite. And I say this as someone who does not typically like to mess with old school recipes -- I like traditional foods, passed on through generations. But these are definitely an upgrade - fresh, local, colorful, flavorful and fun!

great to buy as gifts for that vegan, gluten free, foodie cousin who is always onto the next big thing!

This cookbook has become my favorite. Everything is so delicious and not complicated. Some of the ingredients are somewhat different but I found everything I needed. It is worth seeking out the ingredients as the end result is superb.

Daniel W. Graham is A. O. Smoot Professor of Philosophy at Brigham Young University. He is the author of Aristotle's Two Systems (1987); editor of the collected papers on ancient philosophy of Gregory Vlastos, Studies in Greek Philosophy (2 vols., 1995); translator-commentator of Aristotle: Physics, Book VIII (1999); co-editor with Victor Caston of a Festschrift for his mentor: Presocratic Philosophy: Essays in Honour of Alexander Mourelatos (2002); author of Explaining the Cosmos: the Ionian Tradition of Scientific Philosophy (2006); and co-editor with Patricia Curd of The Oxford Handbook of Presocratic Philosophy (2008).

BRILLIANT!

I am an undergraduate philosophy major, and I saw this book when it was available for pre-order on Amazon. There have only been a couple of times when I wanted a book so badly, which shows since there have only been three books I've been glad to spend a lot of money on (this one, Plato's complete works, and a very extensive book on Spinoza). Graham delivers what he promises with a well organized and full account of Pre-Socratic philosophy in Greek, Latin, and English, along with commentary. This is one of my favorite books out of the hundreds of philosophy texts I have spent my money on. The only downside is the price. If you are really, really interested in philosophy before Socrates, willing to spend over $90 for a book, and you are as bonkerishly crazy as Thales like I am, then buy this! Trust me, it will put a big smile on your face.

I can't find a single thing bad to say about this - if you are a serious student of philosophy, then you must get this work. I am sure it will be the standard source for all things pre-Socratic for years to come. Having the Greek text makes this better than other collections, which are usually just translations. Besides having readable English renderings, there are also extensive commentaries on each philosopher as well as great introductions. Best money I've spent in a while...

Based on earlier positive reviews I splurged on this and am glad I did as it's a wonderful book: Clean design, beautiful layout, easy to read, erudite introduction to the work and to each individual thinker, and having the original and the translation side by side makes it easy to compare the two.

Each volume provides the testimonies (ancient sources on the writer's life or philosophy) and fragments, volume 1 for the Presocratics, volume 2 for the Sophists. The fragments are provided in their context and the quotation itself is distinguished from the context by bold font.

After each thinker's fragments, there is some scholarly commentary on the most important interpretive points as well as references for further research. It seems Graham tried to be very faithful to the originals and he relies on careful philology, so some of his translations may be a little surprising compared to the more standard ones (for example, his "A nature is hidden" instead of the usual "Nature loves to hide").

He also provides a new ordering of the fragments in place of the Diels-Kranz edition, but they flow very well and are enlightening in his ordering (and there is a concordance with DK at the end of part 2).

Of course one may also want to look at other translations and at monographs, but this is an ideal place to start both for the translations and for Graham's commentary

A monumental and valuable achievement.

Not bad for an old text

Silly me. I thought I was buying a new 2009 text book for under fifty cents! When I got it, I was still pleased, even after looking at the copyright date for 1998! The book was still in pretty good condition, and has helped me out a little until the right edition comes.
