Screenwriter Reiss (the name is a pseudonym) plants himself firmly in Michael Crichton territory with this techno-thriller. A microbe that eats oil has somehow appeared in oil fields around the world. Any machine that runs on gasoline is rendered inoperable by the microbe. Greg Gillette, an epidemiologist, tries to beat the clock and find an antidote to the techno-plague before society collapses. Written with urgency and wit, the novel (already snapped up by Hollywood) is imaginative and plausibly plotted. The book doesn't feature Crichton's lengthy scientific explanations, but it does have the same sort of plucky characters and high-octane pacing. Sure to be a crowd-pleaser. David Pitt

Don't bother

Black Monday

As others have written, the plot (oil eating/crapping bacteria) was interesting but during the course of the novel, our main character aka SUPERHERO manages to fight entrenched bureaucrats, discover the means of infection, and foil the evil plot, while being a good father, husband and neighborhood block leader. By the end, everyone Good becomes a Better person and a few neighborhood nasties get their just desserts. The waffling US President probably isn't going to be reelected and the world economy; after ditching the US dollar as the world reserve currency, gets all better in a paragraph and a half. Hurrah!

My sentences have become on running and more incoherent as I realize the time I wasted reading this tripe.

Oh, another thing. A submarine captain and a couple of blue jackets rowing ashore in a rubber dingy would not conduct a snatch and grab of the EVIL Mastermind on foreign soil. That's what we have SEALS for.

Great Premise, Flawed Execution

BLACK MONDAY starts with a great "what if" premise: what if the Western world was suddenly deprived of the use of all of its oil? Unfortunately, Reiss doesn't really deliver on the promise of this idea.

In this novel, Reiss goes into familiar territory: within a few weeks of the oil disappearing, he imagines a post-apocolyptic world arising in the United States where Americans, stripped of all their modern conveniences, become violent and cannibalistic. I've seen this type of world before, in novels like Stephen King's THE STAND and Cormac McCarthy's THE ROAD. There is nothing new about Reiss's own attempt, which falls well short of what's been done before.

The major flaw of this novel is the flat characterization. Reiss just isn't very good at creating characters that are distinct and memorable. The square-jawed hero of this book is a virtual superman -- and not the least bit interesting. Most of the dialogue is bland and colorless. There's a lot of action in this novel, but you don't care about any of the key characters, so the suspense level is close to zero.

BLACK MONDAY isn't exactly terrible, but I just didn't find it very engaging. Other than some interesting scientific information about how oil is used and refined, there is little about this book that stands out. I would give it a pass if I were you.

Entertainings, Some gross scenes...

What would happen if a super-bug infects the nations oil leading to massive economic breakdown, looting, and paralyziation of the nations's military? Reiss explores this premise in Black Monday, a thriller about corruption, human greed, and human perseverence.

I really enjoyed the premise of this novel and many of the characters.

I did find myself mildly put off by the first part of the book which describes a hitman gruesomely killing someone in a casino. The same hitman commits several murders during the course of the book including murdering children. There is also a semi-graphic scene of torture which I found rather disturbinng. I found the graphic quality almost made me stop listening. I don't mind thrillers, sex and violence but I don't need the details.

The hero Gillette is interesting but a tad superhuman. Not only is he an ex-gang member, but he is a super-scientist of the ludlum variety, who can out-shoot, out-ski, and out-snowmobile the badguys at a moments notice. He also has 2 hot women lusting after him. Fine, but a little fantastic.

4 stars. The ending was a bit over-the-top, and I could've done without the graphic murder, it didn't add anything in my opinion.

About the Author
Dr. Steven H. Voldman received his B. S. in Engineering Science from the University of Buffalo (1979); M.S. EE (1981) and Electrical Engineer Degree (1982) from M.I.T.; MS Engineering Physics (1986) and Ph.D. EE (1991) from the University of Vermont under IBM Resident Study Fellow program. At M.I.T., he worked as a member of the M.I.T. Plasma Fusion center, and the High Voltage Research Laboratory (HVRL). At IBM, as a reliability/device engineer, his work included pioneering work in bipolar/CMOS SRAM alpha particle and cosmic ray SER simulation, MOSFET gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) mechanism, hot electron, epitaxy/well design, CMOS latchup, and ESD. Since 1986, he was responsible for defining the IBM ESD/latchup strategy for CMOS, SOI, BiCMOS and RF CMOS, and SiGe technologies. He has authored ESD and latchup publications in the area of MOSFET scaling, device simulation, copper, low-k, MR heads, CMOS, SOI, SiGe and SiGeC technology. Voldman served as SEMATECH ESD Working Group Chairman (1996-2000), ESD Association Technical Program Chair (2000), Vice Chairman (2001), General Chairman 2002, and ESDA Board of Directors (1998-2006), International Reliability Physics Symposium ESD/Latchup Sub-Committee Chairman (2002-2006), International Physical and Failure Analysis (IPFA) Symposium ESD Sub-Committee Chairman (2003-2005), ESD Association Standard Development Chairman on Transmission Line Pulse Testing (2000-2006), ESD International Committee on Education (ICE) Asian University Liason and "ESD on Campus" program founder, and serves in the ISQED Committee, Taiwan ESD Conference (T-ESDC) Technical Program Committee (Hsinchu, Taiwan), and the International Conference on ElectromagneticCompability (ICEMAC, Taipei, Taiwan). Voldman has provided ESD lectures for universities (e.g., M.I.T. Lecture Series, Taiwan National Chiao-Tung University (NCTU), and Singapore Nanyang Technical University (NTU)). He is a recipient of over 136 U.S. patents, over 100 publications, and recently wrote a textbook on ESD entitled ESD: Physics and Devices (John Wiley and Sons, Ltd) as well as contributing to the text "Silicon Germanium: Modeling, Technology and Simulation," and providing talks on patenting and invention. He has been highlighted in EE Times, Intellectual Property Law and Business and authored the first article on ESD phenomena for the October 2002 edition of Scientific American entitled "Lightning Rods for Nano-electronics," and Pour La Science, Le Scienze, and Swiat Nauk International editions. In 2003, Dr. Voldman was accepted as the first IEEE Fellow for ESD phenomena in semiconductors for "contributions to electrostatic discharge protection in CMOS, SOI, and SiGe technologies."

After barely escaping being exsanguinated in a vampire turf war and managing to avoid becoming collateral damage in a conflict between two demons, things have settled down a little for Queenland’s number one (by default) supernatural gun-for-hire Matt Hawkins. He’s got a steady trickle of work to keep him – and his semi-tame vampire sidekick Mercy – occupied, and the Old World heavy hitters seem to be keeping their distance for the moment. Of course, with Matt’s luck being the way it is, this can only be the calm before another storm.
Firstly a routine sting operation with local P.I. Erin McRea goes awry when the mark is killed in bizarre – and messy – circumstances, and then Mercy starts pushing against Matt’s authority leading to a frustrated Hawkins getting into an altercation with an ex-NRL player built like the side of a house. The last thing Matt needs is any more headaches, so he’s unimpressed to find himself playing tour guide for a Texan sorcerer, one Randy Devantier, who’s in town searching for a dangerous rogue magic-user and a stolen spell.
Devantier is nursing injuries both physical and psychological, and his mistrust of Hawkins is reciprocated… with interest. They’ll have to find a way to work together, though, as the rogue sorcerer Devantier is hunting isn’t the type to come quietly and has plans for them both. Somehow they need to unravel a case involving magical murder, angry rugby players and flying monkeys, and without killing each other in the process. It’s going to be a long week…

This is the third book in L.J. Hayward’s “Night Call” series and does a fine job of expanding the mythology of Hawkins’ world. We’ve been aware that there are organisations operating in the supernatural world that Matt is outside – and largely unaware – of, but they are certainly aware of him and there’s only so long they can put up with a loose cannon on deck. The introduction of Devantier gives us an insight into what’s going on outside Hawkins’ stamping ground and also how the Aussie vigilante is viewed by the “powers that be”. The friction between the two men allows for some fun dialogue and there’s a definite “this town ain’t big enough for the both of us” vibe which is exacerbated by them being forced to work together.
Hayward’s magic system is well thought-out and it’s good to see the use of such power having real consequences for the user – no throwing the pyrotechnics around with reckless abandon for these guys. Every spell is a risk, and sorcerers aren’t known for living long, fulfilling lives.
There’s not much to nit-pick here except for a few typos, and that’s nothing a quick spit and polish wouldn’t fix. Well worth a read and I look forward to finding out what fiendish creatures will find their way to Matt Hawkins’ door next…

Dr. Dall has spent the past twenty-five years in private and academic medical settings diagnosing and treating patients with sacroiliac joint pain. He has published several articles in major peer review journals on his work with this subject and has contributed new techniques and ideas for diagnosing and treating the patient with a painful, dysfunctional sacroiliac joint. He has shown how factors such as a previous failed lumbar fusion, chronic illness, obesity and chronic pain can make these patients special challenges for the surgeon. He continues to be very active in this area by recently publishing an algorithm for the diagnoses and treatment of sacroiliac joint dysfunction, publishing extensive long-term follow-up studies on surgical outcomes for this condition, and working with engineers in the cadaver lab to answer questions concerning stress analysis in the pathologic sacroiliac joint, how that changes with surgery and how that is affected by fusion of adjacent joints. These are all firsts concerning the current knowledge base for the sacroiliac joint.

Book Review of Surgery for the Painful, Dysfunctional Sacroiliac Joint.

The book is directed to surgeons and rehabilitation professionals who deal with patients who have a symptomatic sacroiliac joint. It covers conservative and surgical care. The author’s limit coverage to that of the symptomatic albeit essentially stable sacroiliac joint. Surgical stabilization for causes of instability such as trauma, infection, and fracture, etc. are not addressed. Nonetheless, brief coverage of that population would be a valuable inclusion in future editions. The editors include two neurosurgeons and one physical therapist, with contributing chapters from four orthopedic surgeons. All have been involved in treatment of this painful condition for some time, including two authors with over 25-years of experience. One chapter presents in vitro research performed by two of the editors.

Most chapters are brief in a book of 16 chapters and three appendixes within 198 pages. Background information is presented in the introductory chapter and the reader is well-informed regarding the recent trend of minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion. A historical perspective is covered within the first two chapters. The second chapter provides an overview of literature on treatment of the symptomatic, stable sacroiliac. The third chapter is a very thorough coverage of anatomy and biomechanics written by the third editor a physical therapist and incudes relevant considerations for surgical planning such as anatomical variation based on gender and transitional lumbosacral segments. A very relevant issue is that of the degree of cancellous bone versus cortical within the specific regions of the sacrum, and contrasting that with the ilium. Coverage of vulnerable neurovascular structures is also presented and appropriately addressed again in a later chapter on surgical planning. The images are high quality much like the rest of the images in the book except for one image of the pelvis in a latter chapter in which the artist took excessive artistic freedom in reversing the lower pelvis.

The chapter on pathology is thoroughly presented with 15 images. The potential role of symptom generating extra-articular and intra-articular structures are presented and also receive elaboration that is insightful and does not appear repetitive in a separate chapter. Only brief mention is made in the book regarding peripartum pelvic joint pain referencing the sacroiliac without acknowledging the role of the symptomatic pubic symphysis joint. Because there is a population with comorbidity in the sacroiliac and symphysis pubis it seems a worthwhile consideration for inclusion in a future edition with respect to both diagnosis and treatment.

A chapter on diagnosis presents an algorithm and it does emphasize the relevance of thorough conservative management prior to surgical consideration. Reference to a hip x-ray appears to underrepresented as it mentions a standard AP pelvic radiograph only. The potential role of hip pathology suggests that a hip series (inclusive of AP pelvic, lateral and frog view images) would be a more relevant radiographic screen. This is particularly relevant given the proximity of the hip to the SIJ, the similar neural pathways and functional link. The overall objective tone in this chapter is woven throughout the book. A concluding statement from the algorithm chapter reads: “It is assumed that this algorithm will undergo much change as more is learned about this very complex joint in terms of anatomy, diagnosis, and treatment options” (Dahl p. 66). The reviewer greatly respects this perspective which is congruent with the belief expressed throughout the book that conservative measures must be thoroughly addressed prior to surgical consideration. The role of intraarticular injection was presented whereas literature on retroarticular injection was under-represented. A discussion on the author’s perspective on pain provocation tests would be welcomed in a future edition, given that these tests were not part of the algorithm.

In two separate section the author tackles the controversial topic of a well marketed concept of aligning the pelvis in the surgical suite prior to fusion. The author states: “(p. 76). For the benefit of the reader, this theory of alignment is based on a belief system which suggests that alignment of external bony landmarks represents suboptimal positioning of the SIJ, which has no support with objective imaging studies. However, there are several studies that counter that belief utilizing sterophotogrammetry with palpatory kinetic tests. The chapter on the lateral approach is particularly insightful in presenting a historical perspective on the development of the devices, which is also given elaboration in chapter 12. The various chapters on surgical approach is thorough in that they include sections on indications and contraindication, safe and danger anatomical zone and intraoperative imaging. The technical information on surgical approaches is thorough. Other subject covered are complications and reoperation.

A chapter on postoperative rehabilitation is additive and is a relevant beginning given that there is a paucity of data on rehabilitation for this emerging population.

Within each surgical chapter there are clinical gems and very practical information on the advantage and disadvantage of the different approaches. The book closes with a round table discussion which is a very welcome inclusion.

For persons who may be candidates for surgical intervention, this is an important resource. In summary, this is an important book on emerging surgical procedures and emerging hardware development for surgical stabilization of the painful SIJ. The science is in the early stages given the emergence of literature over the past two decades and the very recent development of implant hardware. It is anticipated that future editions will offer much given the continued development of the subject matter and contribute additional literature, given that the date of the literature review was April 11, 2013. I met with Dr. Sonia Edan then read the book. I had the surgery and I am virtually pain free 6 days post op. I have used the book daily as a reference in my pre-op preparation and post op healing.
After traveling 5 hours to meet Dr. Sonia Edan I made the difficult but successful decision to have the surgery locally. I had a surgeon, locally, who was highly experienced in this surgery. Prior to my decision I had brought him Dr. Edans book and he was highly enthused as it was a first of its kind. He has been performing this surgery for years but hasnt seen such a complete & broadly informative published work.
